Why should I migrate from app to account? How can I be sure that I won't lose all my passwords?

I am not sure I understand what is the point of migrating from app to account. I've also seen the tutorial to upgrade from ios app to account but it doesn't specify if I can still access my passwords in the old vault.

Additionally I am not sure which master/vault passwords will be used to enter the app after migration, as it is I think I have two passwords, one for the app and one for the vault? (I started with the app on an iPad with one password but then after I moved to another iPad and an iPhone I had another password) I am sorry to say I find this very confusing.

1Password Version: 7.0.5

  • Hi @luissanchezmier

You can read about the benefits of membership here:

What are the benefits of a 1Password membership?

As part of the migration process you’ll be instructed to delete the old Primary vault. This will make it such that you unlock 1Password with your 1Password.com account password.

    I hope that helps!

    Follow up to this.

I have one Apple ID for my personal use and one for my work use since, technically, my employer "owns" the apps on my work computer since they paid for them (they won't be able to access them through my work Apple ID if I leave the company, but that's another issue). I'm very particular about keeping personal stuff off my work devices as much as possible. However, I'd really like to keep all my passwords synced together since I sometimes have a need to log into personal accounts (banking, web mail, etc.) on my work devices and work accounts (expenses, corp email, etc.) on my personal devices.

I currently have the App Store version of 1Password syncing with iCloud on my personal devices. Since my personal devices and work devices log into different Apple IDs, I can't sync my App Store version of 1Password across them (naturally). Because of this, I'm considering a 1Password account. (With me so far?)

My question is: am I correct in thinking that the 1Password account version of 1Password has nothing to do with iCloud/Apple IDs? In other words, if I buy the 1Password account, will I be able to sync my 1Password account on both my work and personal devices even though the devices are logged into two different Apple IDs?

    Thanks!

@ScottyTheMenace: Yep! You're right on (and thank you for walking me through your thought process there — very helpful!) 1Password.com memberships handle everything through signing into that account: that authorizes the app, gets you access to all of your data, and keeps it in sync between devices. Apple IDs or other external services are not at all involved. And since everything is tied to your 1Password account, it doesn't even matter if you use the Mac App Store version of 1Password or not. I hope this helps. Be sure to let me know if you have any other questions! :)

Thanks for that Brenty. Final question:

You say "it doesn't even matter if you use the Mac App Store version of 1Password or not"

    • What is the upgrade path for the App Store version vs. direct download? Are they identical feature-wise?
    • I also hear that the App Store's approval process adds some delay vs. direct downloads. About how long is that in reality?

@ScottyTheMenace: Yep! It's really just a matter of where you prefer to install/update from at this point.

That was very true in the past, but it's generally about 24 hours now. Sometimes it takes a bit to get the notification, but the difference is negligible nowadays. Cheers! :)
