1password stopped working
Suddenly, my 1password acct. would not let me edit items or add notes. Is this because of the new subscription service?

Yes. If you have a subscription account but have not paid, then this will happen.
I would guess that you have a stand-alone licence (since you refer to the subscription service as new) but have somehow got into the subscription account. You can get back to the licenced version, if that's what you have, but we maybe need more details of what's going on.

What do you need to know? It keeps asking for a license key, even though its been registered for a long time.

It's actually asking for a licence? That certainly should not happen.
Can you let us know what vaults you have (Primary, Personal, etc), and what vault you are looking at and where you see your passwords. Even a frozen account will let you read items.

I only have a primary vault.

And although I can read accounts, I can't edit them because they are locked (and I see the lock icon).

When I click on the "Read Only" button, I get a prompt to buy a license.

Hi @bruce_nordeen! How did you purchase 1Password in the past? Did you get it from the Mac App Store, or from our website? You need a license to use it, and if you got it from the Mac App Store you can install it again from there to use it again:
- Launch the Mac App Store and sign in with the Apple ID you used to purchase 1Password.
- Switch to the Purchases tab.
- Click the Install button beside 1Password.
If you got it from our website, you can request your license and use that to get things rolling.
