Extensions deprecation

Hello all,

With the news that .safariextz extensions are on their way out, I should like to clarify the path going forward for 1Password users — as well as best practices for the time being. 🔎

My understanding is that app developers such as AgileBits can integrate Safari extensions into their apps using a new API. Knowing AgileBits’s love of new and modern technologies, I assume that you are already doing this and that this deprecation is not going to affect us Mac users too much? 😬

Now, when I download the 1Password extension as part of the usual 1Password installation process, Safari always asks if I want to download the Gallery version or not. I always choose the Gallery version because my understanding is that it enables auto-updates, but maybe the 1Password app would actually do a better job of keeping the extension up-to-date for me? 🤔

What are we supposed to do as users to ensure our 1Password extension is kept up-to-date? The download page itself is extremely vague: it shows a screenshot of a sheet featuring two “Install from” buttons, but it only says “click the Install button” as if there were only one! 😲

We are indeed looking to migrate 1Password’s Safari extension to the new framework. In the mean time it is possible to install 1Password into Safari 12 by doing so from the Safari Extension Gallery:

What is no longer possible is installing the extension directly from our website. I’m not aware of plans to update the installation instructions at this time as it seems likely that there will be further changes to this before Safari 12 is available to the public.

    I hope that helps!

    Ben
