Request: Prompt to add username to password-only entries on sign in

I have a bunch of passwords in my vault that ended up being saved with only a password, usually because they were first added in via a password reset form that didn't include a username field. In much the same way that 1Password prompts me to update entries when I submit a password update form, I'd love to see a proactive prompt offering to add a username whenever I submit a sign in form for a password-only entry.

  • Hi @reidab,

So the trouble with this is text fields get used for so much stuff that even a small false positive rate would likely drive people nuts. By limiting detection to password fields we can have a degree of confidence about what we're dealing with and if there are false positives, which I have seen, they are at least so rare that most people aren't affected and are understanding when a weird site does trigger unusual behaviour.

Ignoring the possibility of false positives for a moment, the viability of such a feature would have to consider how much effort would it take to implement, who would benefit and how often would it prove useful. Even if you have a small handful of sites where their inclusion in 1Password was via a password reset form once you've corrected them you probably won't have need of it again. Now I could easily be wrong, my suspicion is though that a very small handful of people may find use in this briefly for a handful of entries and then it would be dormant code.

Suggestions on how 1Password can be more effective are appreciated and it does lead to improvements so I hope I haven't appeared too dismissive. We just have to often make tough decisions given developer time is a finite resource and so best directed carefully to maximise the impact.
