Benefit of the App Store version? Sandboxing?

Hey guys,

is there any benefit of the App Store version of 1Password compared to the one downloadable from Agile Bits? Sandboxing, perhaps?

Also, is the App Store version being updated later or less frequently?

Thanks.

Some people just prefer the App Store. As long as the store is working properly you don't have to worry about where you kept you licence for an app, etc. On the other hand, it takes money away from the developers.

I don't think there are any actual benefits from using the store, but I may be wrong. If one wants a licence rather than subscribing, then one has to buy direct.

App Store updates are always slower than with direct purchases, because the update has to go through Apple's approval procedure, which can take some time.

Welcome to the forum, @otacon85! There are benefits to both the Mac App Store version and our version, though the distinction between the two has shrunk with the release of 1Password 7 for Mac. For one thing, both versions now store their data in the exact same location, so you could (theoretically) delete one version and install the other, and pick up right where you left off. In previous versions, "our" version stored data in ~/Library/Application Support/... while the Mac App Store version used the sandboxed location of ~/Library/Containers/... -- but for the first time in 1Password 7 for Mac, we are a fully sandboxed app no matter which version you use, and both versions store data in ~/Library/Group Containers...

An advantage of the Mac App Store for some people is that it simplifies updating and provides a known/central point-of-purchase/download. The "download" part remains true in version 7, but regarding purchasing, one other difference with the Mac App Store version is that as of 1Password 7 for Mac, the Mac App Store version is subscription-only. If you want to use a standalone license OR a subscription, you'll need our version. Another benefit of our version is that it gets updates more quickly (though not more of them, just that due to Apple's review process, it takes longer for updates to appear in the Mac App Store version than it does for our own version). You can also run the beta versions if you like, when you're using our version, while you can't do so with the Mac App Store version.
