Is 1Password Families the best choice?

Hello Agilebits,

I've been a long time 1Password user and advocate to many friends. Still using a licence bought in November 2009 for the legacy (as you call it) 1Password 3 on Mac.

I recommended you over Dashlane, even if I'd love to support a French personal security company, and more recently against LastPass, which seems to have increasing momentum. Simply because after almost 10 years your software didn't look dated and was still very well functioning.

3 years ago I considered upgrading but:

Yes there's a very down-to-earth reason I do not upgrade to 1P5: looks to me much too expensive (€50) in regard of the benefits from 1P3.
Note: I have 1P 5.4.3 on iPhone (iOS 9 Beta 2) with the Pro Features purchased and syncing through Dropbox.
[...]
Well OPVault format would be available for iCloud only, right? But I can't get 1P 5 from the MAS at $25, because no rebate. So it's $54.30 (50€).

Since then I've moved from Apple to Google for my smartphone OS and I have the free Android app. And yes, I was used to add/edit passwords only from my computers because I never unlocked pro features from the mobile app. I already paid for that on iOS :|

Until a few days ago, everything was still very fine like this.

Anyway, now I'm ready for an upgrade with family sharing and maybe even included cloud storage (instead of a 3rd-party like Dropbox) for the benefit of a web access (I may be using a Chromebook). I understand that paying $50 every ten years will not make a profitable business for you so let's hop on a subscription model ;)

So it's time for a price comparison:

Now, price-wise only, Dashlane is clearly out of the game.

Google Passwords, well I already entrust them with so much, why not my passwords? But no nice integration (save passwords, auto sign-in) with other than Android system or Chrome browser. And no sharing.

So why should I choose 1Password over LastPass subscription?

Here are a few reasons to stay with 1Password and upgrade to Family Subscription and 1Password:

    • You are already familiar with 1Password on macOS. Do you really want yet another application to learn?
    • You are already familiar with 1Password on iOS. Do you really want yet another application to learn?
    • Syncing with AgileBitsCloud is directly supported by AgileBits -- independent from iCloud, Dropbox, OneDrive, etc..
    • Migration to subscription is fairly easy, once you find the clues hidden scattered in the user forums. (Update vault format first, your existing vault contents are copied to a new synced vault named "Private". Embedded documents become separate 1Password objects. These are the high points.)
    • Adding and removing clients is easy - the QR code on the emergency doc can be useful for adding with minimal typing.
    • Additional vaults can be useful for family members or restriction data available on a device.

Additional notes for macOS and iOS users. -- based on personal observations and experience.

    • There is increasing integration of of 1Password authentication by both Apple and third-party applications.
    • Fingerprint recognition works well with 1Password. (I conjecture the same would be true of facial recognition.)

    Hello xz4gb8,

Thank you so much for taking the time to help me decide! While I appreciate the attention you gave to my question, none of the reasons you gave seems relevant (to me) to give preference to 1Password.

You are already familiar with 1Password on macOS. Do you really want yet another application to learn?
You are already familiar with 1Password on iOS. Do you really want yet another application to learn?

I have no resistance to change. Actually, I like it. And I'm already testing LastPass on Mac and Android right now. No real learning phase, it's pretty straightforward; it's just a password manager :)

Syncing with AgileBitsCloud is directly supported by AgileBits -- independent from iCloud, Dropbox, OneDrive, etc..

Of course 1Password sync with its own proprietary cloud. As does LastPass.

Migration to subscription is fairly easy, once you find the clues hidden scattered in the user forums.

Wow, this doesn't sound easy to me!! Actually, sounds repulsive. And LastPass procedure to export/import sounds easier.

Adding and removing clients is easy - the QR code on the emergency doc can be useful for adding with minimal typing.

Ok. Not sure I get that.

Additional vaults can be useful for family members or restriction data available on a device.

Not sure I get the multiple vaults thing but what I want is share some passwords or credit card with some members of my family. I can do that with LastPass.

There is increasing integration of of 1Password authentication by both Apple and third-party applications.

I plan on moving away from Apple computers, as I did with smartphones.

Fingerprint recognition works well with 1Password. (I conjecture the same would be true of facial recognition.)

Works well also with Android, both for 1Password and LastPass.

    Again, thanks!

Does anyone come with other reasons to prefer 1Password subscription?

I think that a lot of really interesting ground has already been covered here, so I just wanted to chime in on a few points:

    • 1Password memberships are billed from Canada, and tax is accessed according to your billing address — so in the EU, that generally means you'd be paying VAT (not sure if there are exceptions, though I believe the rates vary).
    • There are certainly some edge cases with migrating to an account, but this guide will work for the vast majority of people. There is no export/import involved. And we're always here to help no matter what.

But then to the big question: Why would someone choose 1Password over another password manager? For me, there are many reasons, and these are a few for me personally and also many other 1Password users I've heard from:

    • 1Password comes with responsive support. I think this is one of the most important aspects of 1Password. Time is money, after all. Whether there is a problem or if you just have a quick question, we're here for you. And we always love customer feedback.
    • 1Password is the only password manager that has ever won a design award. As Steve Jobs once said, “People think it's this veneer — that the designers are handed this box and told, ‘Make it look good!’ That's not what we think design is. It's not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” 1Password is an Ars Design Award winner. This comes back to the notion that time is money. If everyone in your family can (1) start using 1Password quickly and (2) easily understand new features when they are rolled out, then you save money on time that would otherwise be lost trying to figure something out or fight with a new version. If price is the only consideration, there are plenty of free tools available, but your time is more valuable than that. And of course we're always here to help!
    • 1Password is encryption-based rather than authentication-based. Our security architecture means that a family organizer can recover accounts for other family members. We at AgileBits can never do that. We simply cannot perform a traditional "password reset" for you. With traditional password reset mechanisms, your secrets are only as secure as all your family members' email accounts. With 1Password, account recovery can only be initiated by a family organizer. You can learn more in our knowledgebase.
    • AgileBits never has access to your data. Your data is encrypted on your device, and your secrets are never transmitted to us — they are only known by you, so no one else has the means to decrypt the data. You can read more details on how all of this works in our white paper.
    • 1Password is funded by you not advertisers or investors. Last but definitely not least, we have sustainable prices, so we can serve you for years to come without exploiting you or your data. It’s possible for a company to cut corners on pricing, but then they might need investors’ money, a buyer with deeper pockets, or — worst of all — advertising money at the expense of your privacy. We have gone out of our way to build 1Password so that we have no information about your data or about how you use 1Password. It is not merely that we choose not to collect or use data about you; we have designed our systems so that, for the most part, we don’t even have the capability to collect data about you or how you use 1Password. Learn more about 1Password privacy.

I hope this helps. But be sure to let us know if you have any other questions! And no matter what you decide, stay safe out there. :)
