worth upgrading from 1password6 to 1password7?
I was wondering if I could ask for some of your time. I have used 1password since close to the original release. However, I am currently on 1password6 which I purchased straight from the website (not via the App Store) I am not a fan of subscription based software services and prefer the pay once for the life of that version.
For those that have upgraded from 6 to 7 what is the main factor that you decided to upgrade for? Does 7 give us anything on the day to day that is really beneficial that 6 doesn’t? I am really sat on the fence and am inclined to stick with 6 at the moment.. But wanted to find out a little more.
Thank you for your time

Hello @gandalf1981, thank you for your wonderful support over the years!
I love hearing from folks who have been using 1Password for so long. :+1:I do not wish to sound biased, and would love for other 1Password users to join this conversation to give you their thoughts — however — in the meantime, i highly recommend 1Password 7 as there are so many wonderful additions across the board. Please do take a look at what is new in 1Password 7 for mac, and 1Password 7 for Windows to see what we have in store for you.
One option you might like to consider is trialling 1Password 7 for free, for 30 days as part of a 1Password membership. I know you mentioned not being a fan of subscription based software. This would at least give you an option to trial what is on offer before making a decision either way. To create your 1Password account and get the free 30 days trial to try out the latest apps, please visit https://1password.com/sign-up to get started.

I'm the same type of user as gandalf1981, I got my first licence in 2010. A pure Mac user if it helps to know.
Good reasons for upgrading to v7 I can’t find.
But I checked out the new functions as suggested, any wiser I'm unfortunately not.A redesigned sidebar, can’t see why I NEED this.
The sidebar can organize different vaults, I have well over 900 passwords in my 1P, but to use different vaults I don’t get. For me it’s over-organising. Maybe for people who still are like little Tommy who has small boxes in his desk drawer? With neat labels on it like 6 pencils, 9 Xmas ribbons, crayons, action man accessories etc etc? I’m not, I have a life to live.A new 1P mini
Well, it’s not very mini anymore, I find that counterproductive.Fill logins in apps
Already there in v6Open items in separate windows
Already there in v6Drag and drop items
Only relevant if you are little Tommy, I’m not.Rich text formatting
Nice, but is it worth to upgrade just for this? I’m not sure.Watchtower
Already there in v6.I am sure there are some security improvements under the surface, they are all very, very technical. From the user standpoint surely v6.x handles passwords very safely or does it not?
In summary, v7 looks to me rather like a slightly improved v6.x
Have I missed anything big or got this totally wrong? Happy to discuss.

Security is a moving target. It is something we’re constantly evaluating and buiilding around the current threats. Considering 1Password 6 is no longer being developed, we’d highly recommend upgrading to v7 if for no other reason than to be on a version of 1Password that will continue to be updated. That said, I think there are a number of improvements that you’ve glossed over. Also I do think what you see from 1Password 7 in comparison to 1Password 6 is more realistic of an upgrade from a mature product like 1Password than comparing, say, 1Password 7 to 1Password 3.
As for what I felt was glossed over:
Watchtower
Yes, we had a Watchtower feature in 1Password 6, but it is very limited in comparison. Watchtower now has integration with Troy Hunt’s Have I Been Pwned (HIBP) service, as well as other features like detecting login items you have for sites that support 2FA but you haven’t enabled it for. This didn’t exist in v6.
Logging into apps
Yes, of course this was possible in v6, but the point is that it has been made much more convenient.
Drag & Drop
I don’t know who little Tommy is, but drag and drop makes logging in where the 1Password extension isn’t available much more convenient.
1Password Mini
The point of 1Password mini isn’t necessarily to be small — the point is to get you where you want to be quickly and efficiently without having to launch the main 1Password app. We’ve enabled a number of functions in mini that were not available in 1Password 6, further decreasing the need to dig in to the main app.
It’s all subjective of course. What value I get from 1Password may be significantly different from the value you get from 1Password. What you feel is important to the offering may be significantly different from what I feel is important.
I’d really highly recommend taking a look at 1Password membership as with that option you’ll be able to get the latest updates for all supported devices. We’d always recommend keeping up to date with 1Password, your operating system(s), and your web browser(s). It is just good security hygiene, and regardless of varying opinions about the value offered by various features I’d think all 1Password users could agree that security is one of the two main points of using 1Password (along with convenience).
I hope that helps!
Ben
