Setting new vault
I have a new Mac. I will be moving 1P to the new machine from the old one. At some point the new installation is going to ask me for old vault. I've got a clone of my old HD. Can I just point to the old backups on the clone? BTW, I am not interested in the 1P.com account and plan to keep using what I have.

@RickCunn - I'm not entirely sure what you're asking me. I understand you want to stick with a standalone setup; no problem. Assuming you've got a license for version 7 (or plan to get one), you should be all set on that score. Regarding your data, if you're syncing via iCloud, you don't really need to do anything at all except choose iCloud as your data source when you first run 1Password on the new device. Presuming you're using the same Apple ID and you've got only the one Primary vault, that will be be most simple and seamless way to do it. You CAN restore a backup of the older Mac's 1Password data...but why?
