Logins often (1) deceivingly do not save at all, and (2) do not display user/pass info on card

Options

I am previously a free LastPass user, however I just started using 1Password 4 (with the chrome browser extension) after having it gifted to me. Since beginning to use the software yesterday, I have been experiencing two extremely frustrating problems that I never experienced with the free LastPass version.

(1) On many sites--not all--when I am prompted to save my login info for the first time, I will click "save," only to find later that 1Password never created a new Login at all. Why let me think I am saving a new Login when it doesn't successfully create one? I'd prefer for 1Password to tell me, so I can at least make the Login manually afterward.

(2) For many Logins that are successfully created, I noticed that the username and password do not explicitly display on the Login "card" afterward, if I want to look up what they are. The Login will successfully autofill for me on the site--so I imagine the login info has to be properly saved somewhere--but, again, I cannot see the username and password fields if I am curious what they are.

Please help!

I just partly resolved my issue with comment (2) above. For some sites, the username and password info seem to be saved in a section called "web form details" below. This is confusing because the username and password section at the top of the Login card is left blank. It would be helpful if these fields were also populated, not just in the "web form details" section.

A good example website of comment (2) not working is for my Microsoft account (https://account.microsoft.com/about). 1Password just saved my new Login info, however the only info displayed in the Login card is the URL. There is no username or password field populated, and there is no "web form details" section. However, when I logout and ask 1Password to log me back in, it works. I just have no way of finding out what my stored username and password are for this Login as far as I can tell, and I find this problematic.

@kpaik1: Sorry for the confusion! As you can imagine, 1Password displays the "username" and "password" field data in these sections...but if a login form does not contain fields with these names, they will not be displayed as such. 1Password tries to save all relevant fields, however, which is where you'll see that and other information stored in the "web form details" section. It isn't up to us how websites decide to format things, but we do our best to store it so it can be reproduced at a later time to log you in.

I wasn't actually able to reproduce the issue you describe though. There doesn't seem to be a login form at https://account.microsoft.com/about so I wonder if there's a more direct URL you might be able to provide. I clicked Sign In at the top and was able to save an apparently normal Login item, not exhibiting the traits you describe, at the following URL:

    https://login.live.com/login.srf?wa=wsignin1.0&rpsnv=12&ct=1456220153&rver=6.5.6509.0&wp=MBI_SSL&wreply=https://account.microsoft.com/auth/complete-signin?ru=https%3a%2f%2faccount.microsoft.com%2f%3frefd%3daccount.microsoft.com%26refp%3dhome-about-index&lc=1033&id=292666&pcexp=true&uictx=me

If you double-click to edit your Login item in 1Password, are you able to find the info at the bottom? I also tested this using Chrome. If you're still having trouble saving Logins, could you provide the exact steps you're taking. We will get to the bottom of this! :)

Hi brenty, thanks for getting back to me. When I deleted my already existing Microsoft Live Login, followed your URL, and signed in, 1Password prompted me to save my login information and the Login was successfully created (both username and password info populated)! However, when I deleted that Login to start over, logged out (which then directs me to the original URL I gave you: https://account.microsoft.com/about), clicked "sign in" at the top right, and tried to remake the Login--just from this URL--the Login is NOT created. I took a few screenshots to show what it looks like:

This was a problem I was constantly facing as I was trying to make Logins for myself yesterday (comment 1 in my original post). Even though I click "Save" on the second screenshot, no Login card appears in my Unassigned folder in the third screenshot. Does 1Password require the user to sign in to a website from only certain URL's and not from others in order for it to successfully create the Login?

@kpaik1: No. 1Password will accept any URL you save it with. The significance of the URL used is that some login forms are easier to work with than others.

Now, I'm not sure it has any bearing on the issue at hand, but I did want to mention that the "Unassigned" folder is special: it's a "smart" folder which will show items which are not associated with a regular folder. I thought I should point that out in case it might avoid some confusion down the road.

However, do you really have zero Logins which are not associated with a folder? If you select Logins on the left instead, do you see the Live Login item there? I had realized that I was using a beta version, so I wondered if that accounted for the difference. But after setting up 1Password for Windows 4.6.0.604 (be sure to update) and the 4.5.3.90 Chrome extension I'm seeing the same behaviour: I'm able to save a Login for Live (as I always have).

Are you perhaps performing a search with the wrong term? Can you find that and other items listed in the appropriate category, or under All? You can click the Modified header to sort by date, and show the newest items at the top.

I'm sorry that I'm so perplexed, but at first you said that Logins are not being saved at all, and then you gave Live as an example of an incomplete Login...but indicated that you're not able to save it now. Do you have other software or extensions installed that may be interfering somehow? Thanks for being patient with me as we try to solve this mystery together! :dizzy:

Hi brenty, I'll try to address your questions in order:

    1. Correct, my Unassigned folder is empty because I have zero Logins not associated with any folder. As I create each new Login, I assign it into a "dumb" blue subfolder.
    2. When I experience Problem #1, the Microsoft Live Login does not appear in Unassigned, nor does it appear anywhere else.
    3. I'm certain I am not performing a search with the wrong term. I'm not using the search feature. I tell 1Password to save the new Login to the Unassigned folder, and so I expect it to be in the Unassigned folder after I click "save". However it does not appear there, nor anywhere else.
    4. I can see all of my successfully created Logins if I click the purple All folder. And I can find them in the appropriate blue subfolders where I've put them myself as well.
    5. I don't believe I have any unusual extensions installed that would interfere with 1Password. I disabled my free version of LastPass, and beyond that I have pretty standard extensions such as AdBlock Plus and Wunderlist.

Just to summarize again, I'm experiencing two issues. As I commented in my original post, Problem #1 is that I try to make a new Login, and at times, 1Password simply does not save it to the folder I ask it to; it is not created anywhere. Problem #2 is that occasionally after a successful Login creation, 1Password will not display any username/password on the card, even though it will still let me use that Login to autofill the website afterward. Between these two issues, I would say the frequency that at least one of them has occurred for me is about 50% of the time in 100+ Login creations.

It may be confusing, but I have now experienced both Problem #1 and Problem #2 with 1Password on the Microsoft Live website, through these multiple test tries. I've made two GIF links capturing examples of what I'm experiencing.

Problem 1 - no Login is created at all
    https://gyazo.com/fa8d6daf8a29d97e99afa7e2345d862d

Problem 2 - a Login is created, but only a URL is displayed on the Login card
    https://gyazo.com/a6a9ba0ad8699be8d4d48f93871f33fb

As for support, I no longer wish for personal help fixing my problem at this point. I've manually created all the Logins where 1Password would not do it for me, and I've manually entered username and password fields where 1Password left them blank. From here onward, I don't mind taking it one Login creation at a time, even if these problems occur again. At this point I'm just bug reporting, so hopefully other users don't have to go through the same experience in the future, as this has been a poor experience for me.

@kpaik1: Are you still having this issue after updating to version 4.6.0.604? I want to make sure we're on the same page there, since we shouldn't expect the same results using different apps. Thanks in advance!

Hi brenty, I was reporting these problems on 4.6.0.598. I've since updated to 4.6.0.604. I'll report if I experience the problem further.

  • Hi @kpaik1,

Like Brenty, I've been trying to reproduce this and it seems to be consistently saved to the right folders and even without folders, into the the Unassigned smart folder.

Could you reproduce this with the latest version and then generate the 1Password diagnostics report for us to analyze, there might be something we're missing.

Please use this guide to generate the report and email it to us at support+windows@agilebits.com. Also, in the email, include the link to this thread along with your forum username, so that we can connect the email to this thread.

Let us know here when you've sent it, so we can confirm we got the email.
