2 years agoIssues with 1Password with Profiles in Safari
The following issues I have had recurring when using the safari browser extention with the (new) Profiles enabled. This issue appears when running MacOS 13 and 14 Sonoma -
- Safari 1Password browser extention works (unlocks) and fills in feilds on second, third or any additional profile that is setup and a window is opened.
From the "Default" profile the extension icon generally remains 'locked' or the window opens and the extension shows unlocked and shows passwords, however autofill, copy/paste action fail to respond.
A Clear History will reset 1Password - however when that is completed each profile is reset and the associated 1Password preferences are also reset
When more than one Profile window is open Activity Monitor has a 1Password Safari Web Extension process running for each profile that has significant resource usage.

I still have this issue. It's indeed so annoying, and already for a long time. But the password management of safari is getting better, half the family has given up on 1pw. So maybe I can cancel my 1password subscription for the entire family...

I can confirm that the workaround from jaylindell works for me. Even better, it apparently fixes 1Password for Safari across all profile windows.
(rough) Repro steps:
1. Enable Profiles in Safari for macOS
2. Open any profile window, including the old default "Personal" profile
3. Navigate to a site's login page
4. Observe the locked 1Password icon in the username or password field
5. Click itExpected results:
The normal unlock process should occur (Touch ID, password etc)Actual results:
Nothing happens, no response.Related:
Clicking on the 1Password icon in the toolbar brings up the dialog with an "Unlock 1Password" button. Clicking it does nothing. The locked/unlocked state of the 1Password Mac app has no bearing on the above repro steps – same results either way.

I, too, have experienced this issue and it is annoying, only that because I have found a workaround until Agile Bits can figure out their own native solution (maybe the below will be of help in that effort). Here is what I do (unfortunately you have to do it in each Profile; this is not a universal fix):
- I encounter the locked icon in a website's user/pw fields
- Open Safari's settings (command+,)
- Go to the Extensions section of the pane
- Deselect 1Password for Safari
- Reselect it
- Close the prefs pane
- Press Refresh (ctrl+r). Maybe even refresh it again ☺️
- Now, click into the password field on the website. For me, the locked icon is now unlocked, and it works as expected
The odd thing is that the 1P toolbar icon isn't always unlocked by this process, but the in-field icon is. When I click that toolbar icon, it wants me to enter my 1P password. So I usually don't, because the field icons are unlocked. I find that using the presented user/password unlocks the toolbar icon.
Pretty nutty, Agile Bitsters; hope you can figure this out.
Hope this helps some of you.

Thanks for the reply. There are a few different known issues surrounding 1Password and Safari profiles, some of which have similar symptoms, and our developers are working to get those fixed. I'm not able to provide an ETA on when a fix will be available.
I can let our development team know that you're running into the issue, and provide you with workarounds if any exist, but I'll need to know which specific issue you're running into. I'd like to ask you to send in a console log the next time that the issue occurs so that I can look into this further:
Attach the file to an email message addressed to
support+forum@1password.com
.With your email please include:
- A link to this thread: https://1password.community/discussion/145098/1password-for-safari-and-profiles
- Your forum username: arloguthrie
- Please do not post the console log to the forum. This is for your privacy and security.
You should receive an automated reply from our BitBot assistant with a Support ID number. Please post that number here. Thanks very much!

Your developers have apparently been looking at this for some time. Perhaps it is not something you can fix, in which case please let me know so we dont waste time!

It's just the same issue that everyone else is having, that 1password stops working in secondary profiles. It wont open. It wont fill in passwords. But you already know this. My question is when are you going to fix it, because it renders your software useless to anyone using profiles in safari, and if you dont think you can give me a rough estimate of when you think you'll fix it, then I will sadly have to go and find another password manager!

1Password Team
Hey arloguthrie,
Thanks for reaching out. I'm sorry to hear that you're having issues with 1Password for Safari when using profiles.
To start, I can confirm that our development team is aware of and looking into a few issues that are related to profiles in Safari. Would you mind sharing a bit more information about the issue you're seeing here? Please provide as much detail as possible, including replication steps, so I can more accurately determine what you're running into and what our next steps should be.
Thanks in advance. I look forward to hearing back from you.

I can see that 1password knows that it does not work in safari profiles and has not for some time. Does anyone know what the timeline is for a fix, because I am about ready to defect to another password manager, as this problem renders 1password unusable in safari if you have profiles.
