As far as I see it, you are supposed to right-click the website, and in the browser context menu 1Password->save login to save the new credentials BEFORE you submit the password change dialog on the website. This way it's not required to copy the new password into the clipboard. 1Password isn't able to catch a password change on its own after you changed it on the website and isn't offering to save a changed password afterwards.
This is one of the (few) really annoying flaws of 1Password. I also lost changed passwords like you and had to recover my password on some website. We were told this is a feature (or intentional design decision) and not a flaw, but my opinion differs. Every other password manager I know that hooks into the browser is able to update the password afterwards.
