We've already implemented some major changes since this discussion and you can enjoy them all in our latest beta, or wait for them to arrive in the stable version.
1Password in the browser will now allow you to set your own recipe as default, and the generator will also show up directly in the extension's popup window if you're on a page that requires a new password, making it easy to find and handle.

@BenKenobee The latest version of 1Password in the browser allows you to set the length of suggested passwords in the password generator.
To get to the password generator: click on the 1Password extension icon, click on the large '+' symbol in a circle and click on password generator. Here you can select different types of password, tweak the recipe for each password, manually edit generated passwords and choose the default type for suggested passwords.
