Passwords with '3 letters from password' and not full password

Dear Forum,

does 1Password have the ability to fill in data such as sites that ask for ''3 letters from password' and not full password, such as Nationwide.co.uk or Virgin Moneys Credit Card logins?

  • Hi @andihawes08,

    Thanks for writing in.

No, it does not have the ability to fill in certain characters. Note this would imply that the site said is storing your passwords in clear text since they know which character is in which place.

You can use the Large Type feature in 1Password to see which character is in which location but it does not know how to fill them in because the site randomizes each time and without telling us what it is, we can't fill them in.

Maybe i should be clearer. iPassword can remember the Username and Password, but some sites then have a system where they ask you for, example, characters 1,2, and 5 of a 6 digit passcode.

Any way for 1Password to auto fill?

  • As Mike said in his earlier reply, @andihawes08:

No, it does not have the ability to fill in [only] certain characters.

Generally speaking, these systems are actually designed to break autofilling of any sort. It's done under the guise of protecting against brute force attacks, but some folks in the information security industry reasonably argue it does more harm than good. Breaking autofill encourages weaker passwords because trying to pull out certain characters from a longer, more random and stronger password is a giant pain. Your best bet is going to be using Large Type as Mike suggested. This won't fill those specific characters, but should make it for easier for you to see which character you need and quickly enter them yourself. :+1:
