Create new password from Safari

I'm using 1Password 80500017 with Safari on a MacBook Pro and I just wanted to register a new account on a website. How do I let 1Password create a new random password for me? If I use the "Save in 1Password" button in the password field, the password stays blank. 1Password-mini in the menu bar does not have this option either. I must be missing something. How it this supposed to work?

    Hi @RichieB!

If I use the "Save in 1Password" button in the password field, the password stays blank.

Is this happening on every website, or just on a specific one? If it's happening on a single website, can you please share the URL with us so we can test it?

What version of the 1Password browser extension have you installed in your browser?

It is on every website. I never see any option to let 1Password create a new random password for me except in the full macOS app with existing entries. Does this feature exist at all in the beta?

    I have 1Password for Safari 2.1.4.

  • Hey @RichieB:

Just to confirm that 1Password for Safari is working properly, if you navigate to https://fill.dev/form/registration-username and type in a random username, does 1Password for Safari offer to create a password for you in the password box when you select the password box, like so:

Let us know and we'll be able to investigate further!

Interestingly the fill.dev form does show "Use suggested password" for me. But there are many sites where it does not. Here are a few:

    https://login.one.com/mail
    https://mail.axc.nl
    https://webmail.supremecluster.com
    https://login.globalglaze.in
    https://www.hobbyelectronica.nl/mijn-account/

  • Hey @RichieB:

Thanks for those pages. In those cases (other than https://www.hobbyelectronica.nl/mijn-account/) , those are all login pages, and as such, 1Password for the browser won't offer to generate a new password.

For https://www.hobbyelectronica.nl/mijn-account/, while the login side of the form doesn't offer a generated password, the register side of the form does offer one as expected for me:

I hope that helps clarify what's going on!

I didn't realise there was a difference in behaviour but that makes sense, thanks. The issue I had was during checkout on the same site:

    1. add an item to your shopping basket
    2. open the shopping basket
    3. click on "Doorgaan met afrekenen" (checkout)
    4. check the box "Een account aanmaken?" which indicates you want to create a new account
    5. 1Password will only offer to save, not suggest a password
  • Hey @RichieB:

Thanks for letting me know the specifics of where you were running into issues. I just tested and saw the same behavior, so I'll get it filed to see if we can improve it in the future. As a workaround for now, using the 1Password pop-up, rather than the inline menu, to generate a password filled properly into the password field:

Let me know how that goes!

How do I get that 1Password pop-up in the 8.5.0 beta? It looks very useful.

  • @RichieB:

This popup is part of 1Password in the browser, accessed by clicking the 1Password icon in your browser's toolbar, and then clicking the key icon to generate a password.

Let me know if you need any more help getting it working!

Thanks! I think that is the one place I did not look for the password generator. Will it be added to the 1Password icon in the macOS task bar as well?

That would be nice @RichieB, I will pass the suggestion to the rest of the team :+1:
