1Password for Safari extension stopped working
I just updated to 1Password 8 version 8.7.0-41. The 1Password for Safari icon in the Safari toolbar disappeared. When I go to Safari, Preferences, Extensions, the 1Password extension is no longer listed. I uninstalled and reinstalled both apps to no avail. I am using a 2021 M1 iMac running macOS 12.3.1. The Safari extension app is running but it does not function at all.
For comparison, I just did the exact same update on my older 2017 Intel iMac running the same software and it works normally!
Any advice?
1Password Version: 8.7.0-41
Extension Version: 2.3.1
OS Version: macOS 12.3.1

I wiped my hard drive and reinstalled the MacOS along with 1Password 8 beta and now all is well. I do not know what caused the program to malfunction.

Hey @eishapiro:
This appears to be a known bug with macOS and Safari Web Extensions, I'm sincerely sorry that you had to go the route of reinstalling macOS. I'll leave the steps to resolve this here, in case it happens again.
- Close all open web browsers.
- Open the Terminal app on your Mac: https://support.apple.com/guide/terminal/open-or-quit-terminal-apd5265185d-f365-44cb-8b09-71a064a42125/mac
- Paste the following into Terminal and then press enter to run the command:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -f -R /Applications/Safari.app
- Open Safari and try to enable 1Password for Safari again.

Hello,
having the same issue, this hint doesn't work for me (and I do not want to wipe my whole harddrive ;-) ). Is there anything else I could do?

Hi @SABiltongHunter - excellent to know that the steps Jack provided have helped here!
@judgensen - since this issue has persisted for you, could you send a brief email to support+x@1Password.com, with a link to this thread? That way, our specialists can help look into the details of your setup and figure out what might be causing an issue. Thank you! 👍

Hello @PeterG_1P ,
thanks for your advice. 1P just released an update for their beta so I took this opportunity to follow the steps above and re-installed 1P beta. Now it works again. Which means I am happy but I cannot help to identify what happened. 🤷🏻♂️0 -
Hi @judgensen, first - it's great to know that the re-install has resolved the issue for you. We're happy this issue is no longer a factor for you! 🥳
If you'd like us to follow up in-depth, we likely still can. Diagnostics from the app (and your browser) may still have data that we could use to identify the issue, and we'd be happy to take a look at that.
But I'd like to stress that this is completely optional - and if you'd just like to enjoy the resolution of the issue and move on, that's of course OK too. Congrats again!

How can I get these diagnostics?

Hi @judgensen.
It's better to share the diagnostics report through email with us to keep it private and secure for you.
Since the issue is fixed for you, the report won't provide us with the info we are looking for. In case it happens again, you can follow the guide here to create the diagnostics report and send it to us through email at
support+forum@1Password.com

I just ran into this with 1PW 8 80700090, on BETA channel, Safari Extention 2.3.3 on MacOS 12.3.1. Tried a delete of the extention and reinstall - no change. Ran the command in terminal as above and things worked again.
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -f -R /Applications/Safari.app

Ok, I guess I was able to identify the problem I am having: Starting Safari with cookies turned off renders the 1P-button in Safari useless. Clicking on it doesn't have any function. Turning on cookies doesn't help.
But a Safari restart with cookies turned on enables the button and all its functionalities. Now I receive an email from you guys stating that there was an new registration of 1P with Safari everytime I choose this "solution".
Do you need a diagnostics report for that behaviour?

Hi @judgensen:
1Password for Safari needs to be able to store settings, and disabling cookies or other profile data (which 1Password for Safari uses to store its data about its configuration) would result in 1Password not behaving as expected.
After re-enabling cookies, 1Password for Safari is seen as a "new" install of 1Password, so you'll receive a notification.
