New Login doesn't work for Chrome on Mac

99.9% of my use of 1Password is either generating accounts for internet sites, or using credentials saved in 1Password to login to those accounts.

When I need to create credentials for a site, this was my workflow:
1. Open the 1Password menu bar icon
2. Click on the gear in the top right
3. Select "New Login"
4. Enter username, url, and generate password
5. Copy creds to browser form

I like this workflow because it gives me a chance to:
1. Customize the recipe for the password (some sites don't accept special characters, some sites only accept 20 chars, but I'm going to try a much longer and complicated password by default)
2. Customize the url for the login; often the url for the account credentials page is a different subdomain from the rest of the site

This workflow doesn't work any more; at least not since I switched back to Chrome. When I click "New Login" I get a bell sound. Err, you can't do that. Why?

So now what I have to do is open the Desktop app to create a new login. The browser extensions and menu bar icon seem pretty useless for generating credentials now.

I do see the "Save in 1Password" and "Use Suggested Password" popups in the browser. These are so invasive and annoying. They hide the rest of the form and are especially annoying on a mobile device. I ignore them because the suggested passwords are only 19 characters; I want a much longer password. I can't figure out how to change the recipe for the suggested password, or how to disable the annoying popups.

    Hey @shannoncoen:

I understand that you're unable to create a new Login item via the Chrome browser extension. If you click on the 1Password icon located in Chrome's toolbar, do you see the "+ New Item" button at the top of the window?

If you click the "+ New Item" button and select "Login", are you able to create a new Login item?

To change the password generator recipe for the suggested password, click on the 1Password icon located in Chrome's toolbar, and then select the key icon:

For password type, select "Random Password", and turn on "Use as default for suggestions" :

To disable the autofill menu in Chrome:

    1. Right click on the 1Password icon located in Chrome's toolbar, and select Settings.
    2. Under the heading "AutoFill", turn off "Show autofill menu on field focus".

With that turned off, you should no longer receive the popups you're referring to. I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

    Hello Alvin,
Thank you for your reply. I've never thought to look for a 1Password icon in Chrome's toolbar. Historically I have appreciated that 1Password abstracts me from having to configure browser specific settings, but I'll try what you have suggested.

How should I think about the MacOS 1Password Menu bar utility? Is it superfluous?

  • Hey @shannoncoen:

Great question! They serve slightly different purposes. 1Password in your browser is great at filling forms, and creating new Login items. 1Password mini is great at finding items you may need in other apps to log in.
