Big decision: 1P 8

and there's still no answer regarding a timeline for having 1password 8 in the Mac app store
Correct; there is no final answer here. It is something we're keeping the door open to, but there are no definite plans. Right now our focus is on delivering 1Password 8 through our website. I apologize that's not a satisfying answer, but I'm afraid asking every day and in every thread will not change that. Any news that develops on this front will be sent to a Mac App Store specific mailing list we've established, here.
and also agile bits provides the numbers I've been asking (memory, swap and cpu usage while using 1password and while just "sleeping" from a typical relatively recent 8GB intel and 8GB M1 Mac).
I don't have or know anyone who has a recent model Intel Mac with only 8GB of RAM, so I don't know that we'll be able to provide that. Here are some screenshots from Activity Monitor on my M1 Mac Mini w/ 8GB of RAM, in case that helps.
1Password window open but on the lock screen (i.e. not in use):
Here the window is closed, but the app remains locked, running in the background:
Main window open, app unlocked, editing a relatively small Secure Note:
Main window open, app unlocked, editing a huge Secure Note (the book Pride and Prejudice):
For all of these... I took them while composing this post. So, my primary web browser (Brave) was open, and the 1Password browser extension was loaded on about 18 tabs. I have 5,301 items saved in 1Password, many of which are quite large.
Side note: Activity Monitor resource usage while performing these tests:
I'm not sure this is incredibly valuable information. I'd say the important thing is that 1Password feels responsive and the system isn't less responsive because of it. By most traditional thought processes around memory etc this Mac Mini would be incredibly underpowered for what I'm doing with it. I'm running two 3440x1440 ultrawide monitors (one via Thunderbolt and one via HDMI), 1Password, Brave with 2 windows each with ~9 tabs, Activity Monitor, Slack, Messages, Calendar, Simplenote, Zoom, Twitter, Podcasts, BBEdit, and Things. Alfred, VLC, CleanShot, and Tresorit are all running in the background. I don't have any stutters, sluggishness, or other symptoms of things performing poorly. Even if I open 1Password, use the mouse wheel, and scroll it as fast as I can across my 5,000+ items, everything is smooth. That's my experience. I hope that helps!

@Ben thanks! yes! of course it helps. Please understand that, as much as you tell us that the app "feels right" and doesn't make the system slower, these numbers show that the app is not using excessive resources, which is really important when running a lot of other things like word processors, or several apps from adobe, or logic and final cut...
I'm running normally on a 32GB M1 max MacBook Pro, and have a secondary i9 16GB one, but the rest of my family are running on either 8GB M1s or older intel MacBook Pros with 16GB RAM (asked about 8 because some ppl asking me are running on smaller intel laptops). The numbers you provided, completely dismissed my concerns about the move to electron! :), so when 1Password 8 is available in the Mac App Store I will definitely upgrade, and also recommend my family and anyone asking to do so.

Thanks for your thoughts. Why is it so important for you to have 1P8 available via the MAS? (I intend to switch to a direct download from AB.)

there's a number of reasons
- while everyone in my family has been using Macs since... at least the 90's (though I started earlier), it looks like I'm the one in charge of reminding everyone to update OSs and apps. If I have to tell them to update anything by means of anything out of the Mac app store, they may keep running old, possibly insecure versions of their software
- simplicity. I don't have to be dealing with several update methods myself. I already do for Microsoft Office, some IDEs I use, and my 3d printer's software, but I expect those to be exceptions rather than "the way things work". I may even switch to update Microsoft Office from the Mac App Store since it's been there long enough now, and I'd certainly update my (our) Adobe subscription(s) if they were available there, too. For Microsoft Office, I've already moved part of my family to updating via Mac App Store for simplifying their lives.
- Whenever I recommend software to my friends and acquaintances, it's easier for me to point them to the Mac App Store than to point them to several different websites. Granted, there's no way to get blender or Maya from the Mac App Store, but then again, those some of the very few exceptions I am willing to handle.
- Trust. People just trust more a download from the Mac App Store than from a "random site", which is the case for anyone that doesn't know 1Password and will try it because I recommended it.
The short answer, if I only think of myself, is simplicity. Having the software in the Mac App Store makes it easy for me to keep it up to date and to make my family keep it up to date.
Note there may be other use cases requiring or benefiting from the MAS distribution approach, though.
If you're the only one using 1Password or everyone depending on you using it is comfortable enough with downloading / updating out of the MAS, you should be safe. (My other concerns regarding performance and resource usage have already been answered quite successfully).

Hi folks,
Thanks for continuing to engage here. I'd like to hit on a few points:
thanks! yes! of course it helps.
Awesome. I'm glad to hear it does. I think for most people they just want to know that the app operates smoothly and doesn't make their system slow, but as someone who self-identifies as a "power user" I can understand some of the desire to hear more about the "feeds and speeds," as it were. I think Apple Silicon has completely turned our notions about memory usage on its head though. I replaced an Intel iMac with 32GB of RAM with an M1 Mac Mini with 8GB of RAM and it keeps up with the same workload. In fact, the M1 outperforms the Intel machine that has 4x its memory. This is why I say I don't know how valuable those numbers really are.
Please understand that, as much as you tell us that the app "feels right" and doesn't make the system slower, these numbers show that the app is not using excessive resources, which is really important when running a lot of other things like word processors, or several apps from adobe, or logic and final cut...
For sure. As I mentioned above I'm probably doing a lot more multi-tasking than the target audience for this little M1 Mac Mini with 8GB of RAM, and even under the most stressful conditions for 1Password I'm not experiencing any slowdowns. Many of the apps I'm running are the ones accused of being "memory hogs." On top of what I mentioned above, I do some "lite" development work (I'm not a developer, I just play one on the weekends), photo & video editing, and even some casual gaming (World of Warcraft, Hearthstone). I have no problem having 1Password open when doing these things.
Admittedly I'm not sure I could do all of that on an Intel Mac with 8GB of RAM, but I think that is more a commentary on M1 vs Intel, rather than a commentary on 1Password.
I have a 2018 MacBook Air (Intel, obviously) with 16GB of RAM. Admittedly, it is a little sluggish, especially when compared with my 2020 Mac Mini M1 with 8GB of RAM. It is a little sluggish even if I uninstall 1Password though, so again I think this is more commentary on the hardware and how it has held up than on any one app.
so when 1Password 8 is available in the Mac App Store I will definitely upgrade, and also recommend my family and anyone asking to do so.
I want to be clear: I can't promise that is going to happen, and so I wouldn't encourage you to hold out.
There is an auto-updater built into 1Password 8 which will prompt the user to restart the app to complete. I realize that may not be quite as convenient as the App Store for your use case, but I'd argue it is the next best thing.

First, I am happy to report back here that everything (download, install, ease of adding(/updating-upgrading?) the Safari (and FireFox) addons) went completely without the hint of a hitch.
My first impressions are 100% positive… looks clean; speedy; no sense of high CPU or memory usage.
It was still a 'Big decision'. And I'm very grateful to everyone who helped me reach it.
Especially @Ben , @ag_tommy , @dteare
At this point, all I can say is that I definitely made the right decision.
Thanks again! Very satisfied user/customer :-) !
One small question (unless anyone has had time to look at this request/question, please): is it possible in 8.7.0 to selectively collapse tags - I have a long and somewhat 'involved' tag hierarchy and it'd be useful to be able to choose the tag 'families' visible at any one time, please.

That's so great to hear, @Mark Sealey. I didn't expect anything less, but it is always satisfying to hear when a plan comes together. 😃

Our extensions team is a little backed up at the moment, but I'm sure they'll get back to you on the selective filling inquiry. As for collapsing tags... it isn't a thing in v8 yet, but I think it is a great idea and I'll be happy to advocate for it.

@Ben ,
…I didn't expect anything less…
Neither did I, actually - especially after having been a happy user almost since day 1.
The criticisms, though, certainly catch attention, don't they.
