Custom category icons
Can one change the icons in 1Password 7? I'm not an American and so the icon for Social Security Number irritates me no end. Please tell me I can import or something like that so I can rid myself of this irritation. Life has enough irritants without that particular one!!!
PS do I have to buy 1Password8?

Hello @HelenBubz! 👋
You can certainly add a custom icon to your Social Security Number item using 1Password 7. Follow these steps:
- Open and unlock 1Password for Mac.
- Click on your Social Security Number item and click Edit.
- Double-click on the item's icon.
- Use the photo picker to add a new custom icon.
- Click Save.

If you have a 1Password membership then 1Password 8 is already included and there is no additional fee. You can download 1Password 8 directly through our website:
Let me know if you have any other questions. 😊

thank you for the walkthrough @Dave_1P. However the issue remains in that I would have to do that every time I create another record, which means I would need to keep every custom icon. What I should have made clearer was whether I could do this on a per template basis. Is that doable?
Helen - off to enter insurance details, wishing there was a template specifically for insurance policies.

Is it possible to customise the actual templates - not the records on a one by one basis? I've found myself having to adjust the same field names every time I create a new record and that just makes more work - not less!
Alternatively can you make your own templates? If not, then why not?

I've merged your two threads together so that I can answer all of your questions directly. 🙂
It's not currently possible to customize the built-in categories or to create custom templates. That being said, this is a very popular feature request and I've added your feedback to our internal tracker so that our developers know that this is something that you'd like to see. I've also passed along your suggestion for an Insurance category, thank you for the idea!
I myself use Secure Notes to keep track of things like recipes or other information that doesn't neatly fit into one of the categories available in 1Password. Secure Notes are very flexible and you can add custom fields to organize the information that you add. Here's a blog post that explains some of the possibilities: Making the most of Secure Notes
Here's a suggestion that might help your workflow: regardless of whether you use a Secure Note or another item type you can create multiple items with the same set of custom fields by using a "template". Set one up the way you want it, then save that as an empty "template". Then you can duplicate that item (Command - D) and fill in the fields. You can group those items together by using Tags. You can even add custom icons to those items.
What do you mean by a 1Password membership, @Dave_1P? I don't understand.
If you pay either a monthly or annual subscription then you have a 1Password membership and that membership includes a free update to 1Password 8. Let me know if that clears things up. 😊

I looked at AppStore (which is where I bought 1Password 7) and there's only 1Password 7. Having just temporarily lost everything I had on 7 and seen that 8 has a Restore capability I'd like to have that feature, but I'm not sure I won't be charged as I don't have a registration key.

1Password 8 for Mac isn't currently available in the Mac App Store. Instead, you can download the app directly through our website:
If your subscription is through Apple, you can still download the app directly from our website, and your subscription will carry over. There's no need to change your billing information.

I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble restoring your items. You can also restore items using 1Password.com: View and restore previous versions of items
I hope that helps. 🙂
