Switch from Nightly to Beta isn't working

According to the instructions here you should be able to switch back to Production by changing the channel from Beta to Production, and you’ll be updated to the next stable release when it’s available. I assume it should be the same when switching from Nightly to Beta?

Checking the release notes I can see that there was a new beta released 25/5 and I switched to the Beta channel before that date, I think I even switched back before the earlier 18/5 release, but I'm still on Nightly for some reason.

Do I have to do a complete uninstall to fix this and if so, what happens to all the settings and configurations I made in the app? Do I need to reconfigure the SSH agent again for example?

I switched to the Nightly channel earlier this year to try out the integration with SSH and 1Password CLI, but those features are released to production now. I also don't have a TPM module so I have to enter my password at least once a day on the Nightly channel, so it's "good enough" for me to be on the Beta channel.

  • Hello @Backspaze ! Thanks for sharing your feedback! We appreciate every idea that could make 1Password better.
This behavior is by design, changing the update channel only changes where you will get the next updates from, you can find more information in this thread (https://1password.community/discussion/comment/642608/#Comment_642608).

Having said that, to switch from Nightly to Beta with out losing your settings or SSH configuration please follow these steps:

    1. Quit 1Password.
    2. Open the Start Menu, paste this code into the search field, and press Enter: %LOCALAPPDATA%\1Password
    3. Once you've navigated to this location, right-click the 1password.sqlite file,
click Rename and name the file 1password-old.sqlite.
    4. Open the Start menu.
    5. Click (Windows Settings) > Apps.
    6. Click 1Password, then click Uninstall.
    7. Download and install Beta using this link https://1password.com/downloads/windows/#beta-downloads
    8. Sign in or add your account

Thanks for helping us making the app better. :)

@ag_maryam I followed the instructions but there were no Windows beta downloads on that link, only browser betas. So I downloaded and installed the ordinary release a bit further up on that page, and then switched to the beta channel > searched for an update, and now I'm on 80800104, so mission accomplished I guess, albeit through a small detour. My settings seems intact as well.

I guess I can delete 1password-old.sqlite now since the reinstall went fine? I also found an old sqlite file in that folder, called 20160514.sqlite with a last edit date of 2016-09-10, which I guess is a remnant of an old install which also can be deleted?

I've read the other thread you linked to, but either I've stepped on a bug, or I'm not entirely understanding the downgrade concept. As I understand it, when I switch from nightly to beta, I assume that I will stop getting the nightly updates and that 1Password will instead put my updates on hold until the beta version gets to the same version as the nightly version I was on. If that's how it's supposed to work, then I think I've found a bug, because I kept getting new nightly versions, despite having switched to the beta channel.

  • @Backspaze , I am glad that you were able to update your app!

It is safe to remove your older database instances.

1Password 8 channels are setup in such way that Nightly would have the latest version then Beta would be most current that Production, therefore you can switch from Production to Beta or Nightly but in order to downgrade, you need to uninstall and rename or remove database then reinstall the other channel.

Having said that, we know that this is not ideal for all users and we are currently working on improving this behavior.

Thanks again and have a wonderful day.
