1password 8 is a step back

Was prompted to upgrade today. Like the Mac app, this has got worse.

My chief frustration has added steps in. Auto fill on websites require the pop up then the click to confirm, whereas 7 dropped the details right in.

In the app, you have to click more to get to the separate elements like passports etc from categories, and search is in a different screen - requiring more steps.

The UX team need to be shaken a bit on this, come on guys.

    Agreed. Like I posted at https://1password.community/discussion/132379/1password-frustrations, parts of this update don't make things better.

    Your post was much better articulated than mine!

    I like the 1password newsletter. It’s written by actual people. Yet the app is designed without people considerations.

    Yet the app is designed without people considerations.

    That's exactly the sense that I keep running against.

    Who is making these user experience decisions? Is it coders who spend every day -- day-in, day-out -- working on 1Password without regard to usability? Surely there is a product manager who looks at the UI/UX from the point of view of the average user who doesn't have the time to spend a week on a 1Password bootcamp to keep up with all of the confusing changes.

    I want a password manager is that safe, secure, intuitive, dependable -- and doesn't require wasting time studying support documents that appear to be out of date, spending time in support forums (realizing that I'm not the only one frustrated by the product direction), and opening support tickets to deal with basic tasks like upgrading an app. 1Password used to be be these things but it's becoming less so with each "upgrade".

    Really I think the development team did a great job and we should congratulate and give them a break a little. The app is different, and different dosen’t mean worse. It will take some small time to adjust to the differences, but the changes overall are great.

    Also, this app was completely rewritten. They lunched a viable product. More features will come. They are also humans. Give them a break.

    In the end, you spend time on apps and websites, auto-completeing passwords. That is the killer feature and it works.

    This isn't just "different" -- it's sloppy and frustrating. Note the points linked to in my separate post.

    Glad you're happy with it though.

    Bug
    iOS on iPad - when you delete an entry it still shows in the list with everything else. The item is actually deleted because it has the option to ‘restore item’ so it shouldn’t be there. Very confusing.

    Please can you restore the ‘pull down’ to search on iPad so it works like the rest of the OS. I used that all the time and having to find ‘search’ is less useful.

    The app for me is useless - I am trying to find an alternate now - this version is unusable for old folks that would prefer to revert to the old version which works in a logical fashion. Can I get back to the pre 8 version? How? Can I stay there?

    Searching works also worse than it was before on v7 (iOS apple iphone). Previously searching for words I was getting more results. Now im not able to find some logins quickly:
    Eg: Mybenefit
    V7 - was able to find it using my or just benefit
    V8 - searching word benefit gives nothing

    Seems like it was a bad idea to remove the option to show password in version 8, on iPhone. The only apparent option is to choose “edit”, which could mess up your password If you make a mistake.

    why should we be giving them a break for such an absurd decision?

    Having been a software developer for many years, I have sympathy for receiving bad feedback from end users.

    However... I think the responsibility for this half-baked version lies squarely on the product managers. Surely if they'd delivered this version to a wide field of beta testers they would have received the same feedback we are giving them now. And with that feedback, they shouldn't have released a version that is so poorly received.

    So I don't see much reason for "giving them a break". We are paying customers who should expect to have a usable product that's been well-designed, thoroughly tested, and reflects our real-world usage.

    Well the team doesn’t need a break. I respect developer work. I have no idea how much work they had to do this past two years for the rebuild. But the product manager / heading team / CEO are in fault in my opinion . They probably gave developer a calendar that didn’t allow them to launch a complete app on the scheduled date, they probably fixed the launch date first and didn’t took account about the bugs that need to be fixed before launch. Never mind the clients if investors are happy that the launch date was respected…
    The unify of the code is an agilebits problem not their client problem. We don’t care how the app is written, the only thing we care is the app to stay at least as usable it was before, at least as well designed, optionally faster, lighter. (Spoiler alert : for around the same features the app is 25% larger).

    Good luck for agilebits développera to fix unplanned features that where in the app since years but not planned by head of AgileBits. It is so sad to watch a previously great app being badly designed :/

    I agree with everything you just said.

    This is the opposite of a customer-centric release. I suspect (based entirely on what we're seeing with this version -- I don't have any inside knowledge) is that this version reflects internal chaos at the company, rather than it being something customers want.

    Really missing the feature in 1P7 where it would prompt me from the iOS keyboard suggestions area to input a password. Having to go into the safari extensions and then search for the correct one, because it isn't automatically suggested as it was before, is so frustrating and time-consuming. Also when in an app on my iPhone it no longer suggests the correct password. Just tried logging in to the Vudu app and instead of the correct suggestion where I just need to tap it, I have to leave the Vudu app, open 1Password, search for Vudu, copy the password and then go back to the app. Seriously bad design. Maybe someone knows of a setting I missed turning on but come on devs. This is so bad I'm looking for a different product to use now that has these features.

    Looking to dump 1password for something that people who develop it actually use it--obviously NOT the delveopers of 8...

    Indeed a step back! I'm going back to v7, or looking elsewhere.

    I'm afraid it's back to v7 for me until PIN unlock and sorting Favourites alphabetically return, quite a step backward for an app that I've considered a constant.

    @RobTX I guess that the person was used to pressing the field once and it brought up the menu to either reveal, copy, or show in large type. I personally am used to the small menu popping up and I do believe that there should be an option to change it.

    Sorry if this didn’t make too much sense, my English is pretty bad as it isn’t my first language,

    I loved 1Password since it was available for Nokia and blackberry and I still love it today but I have to point out that 1passsord 8 UX is worst than 1Password 7. There are not all capabilities that we found on 1Password 7, many call to action are more confusing than previous version and in some cases they take more gestures (tap or other one) to reach the same function than previous one. Finally I think perhaps someone wanted to force the UI refresh of an already almost perfect UX and it is a shame. I’m always enthusiastic when new version of App or product comes out but in this case If I could do it I would to rollback to 1Password 7.

    I also appreciated and utilized 1Password daily and even gifted it to several friends and family members, now I am sorry I did and will warn each NOT to upgrade to v8. It is terrible! Much of the functionality I used is gone, especially the ability of a workaround to "find" keywords within in each LogIn and/or Note. Maybe it is time to look elsewhere for a solution if the team at 1Password thinks this is an improvement, because it is not!

    Another gripe that I have is they don't have an integrated web browser in the new app. I'm probably going to continue using 1Password 7 either until they give this feature back to us or they stop supporting the old one. This is a real step back for them, very disappointed.

  • Hey folks, thanks for your feedback.

    @davidmh81:

    We built 1Browser at a time when Safari extensions weren’t possible and it was the only way for 1Password to fill passwords. Now, iOS has an AutoFill Passwords feature and we have a new 1Password extension for Safari, making this the right time to retire 1Browser. This also means that 1Password 8 will not be rated 17+, a requirement that only existed because of 1Browser. Unless the landscape shifts significantly, adding 1Browser back doesn't make sense at this time.

    @tnetennba:

    Since most mobile devices now include fingerprint scanners or face-unlock options, we’ve revamped our security settings to enable you to unlock 1Password with your account password or biometrics. 1Password 8 showcases a modern, beautiful UI, and we wanted our unlock options to follow this trend and provide the most up-to-date unlock options. As for the ordering of Favorites on the home screen, while I can't promise anything, this is something we've heard, and hopefully we'll be able to make some improvements to this.

    @quantumcosmic:

    If 1Password 8 is enabled as the AutoFill app in iOS Settings > Passwords, you should be able to tap the Passwords text or have Logins suggested in the QuickType bar. If that isn't what you're seeing, we can definitely take a closer look.

    @zemo:

    We're continuing to iterate on search, more specifically substring search. We've made some changes available in 1Password 8 for desktop in the nightly releases, but those chances aren't in 1Password 8 for iOS and Android just yet.

    @MattKb:

    Are you referring to 1Password filling suggestions not showing immediately in the QuickType bar, and instead displaying "Passwords"?

    It's inefficient to not have the built-in browser. Some people, especially those who work for the government, such as myself, need to change passwords frequently. It's a lot more efficient to work with the built-in web browser to change passwords rather than switching between 1Password and a separate browser. Is there some new efficient way to change passwords within another mobile web browser?

  • Hi @davidmh81:

    1Password for Safari is our fully featured extension that you can now use in Safari, which may be easier to use when changing passwords.

    Get to know 1Password for Safari on your iPhone or iPad

    Exactly is the long step forward but they got rid of way too many useful things (aka features). Now they are returning them.

    Jack, with all due respect, I've been a subscriber from day one (outright purchaser long before that) for the functionality not the "modern, beautiful UI", functionality that I now consider broken. I've deleted v8, v7 and closed the account too, it's taken me all day to do it but it's now very much time for me to embrace Keychain once more.

    I am considering leaving 1PassWord myself, very disappointed in v8.
