How to change the Category assigned to a record

I also need this feature..! I would say if 1Password offered a Convert Button where it moved existing data to the equivalent field in the new category and if thay field didn't exist it just added it and filled in the data, that way the only info missing would be new info required for that new category.

+1 for me. about time this be possible!! Or at least provide a work-around, say by copy/paste or something. Something better than nothing.

Hi, I'm also interested in this feature. Have you got any update, by the way? It seems you are working on it since a while, isn't it? Thank you

Hello @MaurizioM,
Thanks for your +1 for this feature request. I don't have any news to share, but have also passed your feedback along to the Product team!

LastPass convert and please +1 this feature request to the devs. I see it's been in the wishlist for while: is there a public viewable wishlist we can directly view and vote on?

Hi @BillMann 👋
Welcome to the 1Password Community! We're happy to have you.
I'll gladly pass along your request for the ability to switch an item's category to our Product team.
is there a public viewable wishlist we can directly view and vote on?
While we don't have a public wishlist that you can vote on, adding your feedback in threads such as this is a great way to ensure that feedback makes it's way to the appropriate team for consideration 🙂.

Please add me as a +1 for the ability to convert an existing record to a new category.
Thank you.0 -
I added my +1 for this feature almost a year ago, in May of 2023. Today I got an email saying someone else voted for this feature. This prompted me to read through the whole thread again for context.
My question now is: Given how many people want this, why isn't it on the roadmap? What's more important?
I understand that spiffy new features make headlines and attract new users, and senior management tends to prioritize that over under-the-hood improvements.
But I argue that non-sexy infrastructure- type things like reassigning categories are easily featured as a draw for new customers.
"Now 1Password is even easier to use! Reassign categories at will to make 1Password serve you even better!"
Hey, I'm not on the dev or marketing teams, and I don't own the company. I'm just an end user who wants the software to make things easier for me.
And that seems worth doing and worth shouting about.
As always, thanks for reading all the way to the end of this!

Hi @wyberto, thanks for letting us know this is something you'd like to see as well! I've gone ahead and filed your feedback with our Product team.

Hi @greggsewell1, thanks for checking back in with us about this! I don't have any news I'm able to share about this feature just yet. However I can definitely understand where you're coming from, and I've added a note including what you've said here to your +1 for our Product team to see when considering and prioritising upcoming changes and new features.

I agree with everyone. I am a software engineer and this change is not difficult as long as you don't get buried in self inflicted requirements. Also, keep it simple, you really don't have to have maps and all that crap. I just converted 6 records by hand and the whole time I am thinking, "If they could change the category and bring in the new labels, I could do the rest. If your curious how, and if you have a software engineer, shoot me an email and I will tell you how.

Hi. I'm not going to repeat all that's already been said, except that, although being a newcomer to this 1Password community, I am too very interested in this category change feature. It would be simply great.

I just moved from LastPass and I'm surprised that some of these basic things (e.g. change categories, tag order) are missing from 1P. I've only been using 1P for about a week and haven't had a lot of time to play with it, but I'm afraid of what other missing features I'm going to run across.

@1P_Gem, @Dave_1P, and the rest of the support team, I don’t envy your position. It seems to me you’re tasked with making sure community members feel heard, but with no response from your Product Team, I for one don’t feel heard at all.
I certainly don’t expect your software developers to “sit up and take notice,” if you will, because a few 1Password users ask for a feature. That’s not reasonable.
It’s just as unreasonable, though, for silence to be the only response.
If the Product Team feels the concerns expressed in this thread don’t need to be on your roadmap, then please tell us that. We’re all big enough people to deal with such a decision. But saying nothing—well, no one likes being ignored.
I mean no disrespect to you, @1P_Gem and @Dave_1P. But being told nothing but “we hear you” and “we’ll let the Product Team know”—to be honest, it’s beginning to feel disrespectful to me, and perhaps to other community members.
Please tell your Product Team that we’d all like to know if they ever plan to work on our feature request or not.
As a small child, I learned early on that, when my dad said, “We’ll see,” it most likely meant no.
Please don’t treat us like children who don’t deserve a reasonable explanation.
I apologize for the rant, but I’m pretty frustrated right now.

The team doesn't have any news to share about this feature request. We tend to play things pretty close to the chest since we don't want to promise new features only to frustrate folks when those features are delayed or cancelled.
Hopefully I'm able to share more in the future. For the time being, I'll continue to push for this feature internally. 🙂

+1 from me too for this, along with a way to bulk select all the ones you want to change in one go!

@Dave_1P Any chance you have got this to the top of the development list yet ???
We desperately need this now please.0 -
I second the comments above. As I have said before a good, experienced Software Engineer could help with this. If you don't have one on staff then you should consider hiring one for a while or bring one in as a consultant.

This topic is now over two years old and the feature still doesn't exist?
I need the feature too. Just migrated from my KeePassXC and it looks terrible.0 -
I second this longstanding request. It's all good and well that certain fields should be filled and checked for database consistency when an item's category is changed. but that should be easy to flag - copy the existing stuff into a general (e.g. notes) field and show the fields that should be set up properly.
Btw., have you tried using the "create a new item" e.g. in the passport category? The fields requested there are relevant, but tedious. I tried to set my birthdate. It shows a calendar of the current month (July 2024) and the only way to get to my birthday is 77 years x 12 months = 924 clicks on the back arrow! You can't be serious! I entered the birthdate as a text field. So much for keeping the database consistent, Mr. Developer.1 -
I came here with the same question. Among other problems, I have many Login items I want to change to Wireless Router items so I get the QR codes.
I'm not asking for fully automated conversions, only the ability to see one old and one new item side-by-side so I can drag the old fields across to the new item, and hopefully be able to do it once manually and 1Password do the same for the selected, identical source Items. It's partly possible now to do single conversions with some manual effort, but the new item window is stationary in the center of the screen. On a 13" MacBook Pro it can be a challenge.
Being able to apply that mapping to multiple old items would be huge for users and a reasonable coding effort. Here's a use case for why this is important. I have forty-one "Passwords" item types I want to change to "Login" types. I don't know why they were created that way; I don't think it was my choice, and they all lack user names. Anyway, It's a simple conversion: Old password → New password, Old website → New website, and I have to remember and enter the username.
What I need is the ability to:
1. Select all 41 items
2. Choose a "Convert to..." menu item
3. Select a New Item type (maybe with a submenu)
4. See the old item's template on the left and the new template on the right, possibly with one item's field data shown on the left for a more intuitive UX
5. Drag fields from left to right for the mapping I want. See lines from old to new fields. and be able to move or remove them. If it's simple to pre-match the identically-named fields, that would be nice. The titles can transfer over untouched.
6. Click a button, and my mapping is used to create a bunch of new items from the old ones.
7. The final step could be nothing, which is probably best for budget. Other ideas are to have an option to Archive the old items with one click. Undo would be nice, but this can be manually achieved pretty easily. Thanks for continuing to listen.

I want to bump this feature request. I'm a long-time user and have thousands of passwords in my vault. I don't want to have to copy and paste hundreds of them by hand just to get the Categories fixed. Surely this process can be automated by the developers.
