Functionality loss when migrating from Standalone vault to 1PW membership
I am in the process of upgrading from 1PW7 (Mac) to 1PW8. I followed the instructions on the 1PW support site and the migration of my standalone vault items moved smoothly to my new cloud based 1PW account.
I was in the process of checking my newly created cloud account to verify all the items had migrated when I came across an issue. All of my items containing file attachments (things like pics of my license, passport, soc sec card, etc) were not available in the cloud vault. Instead there was a red error message “This item has an unsupported field”. In other words the files did not migrate.
So I began researching this on the community forums. Apparently this is a long-standing issue that has been referenced in many notes going back over a year. 1Password’s response has been that they are aware of the discrepancy between the cloud based vault and the users application-based vault and are “working” on a fix or in other terms a “convergence” of like-functionality attributes. A supposed “work-around” is to create a “documents” folder on the cloud vault and add all the files (separately from their associated vault items) to the folder. This then necessitates that you download them for viewing purposes. Unfortunately when I tried this with some of my PDF files, the files were unreadable (scrambled).
IMO, this raises some serious concerns.
1. What happens when my phone is lost and I need quick access (prior to a complete restore on a new phone from a backup) and none of the files are available in the cloud for reference? Normally, I’d simply log on from another device and the problem is solved….not so here.
2. This negates a critical feature of 1PW..ie..a safe and secure method for having critical documentation at hand when needed. Sure, I could sign-on from a family members phone, but the items will not be in the cloud vault.
3. When asked, 1PW has never acknowledged a proposed timeline for when this feature will be added or even if it’s on some internal corporate roadmap, as 1PW does not share this information publicly.
4. I have searched for user workarounds until such time as 1PW addresses this long standing issue, but have not found any.
IPassword’s default position seems to be “don’t worry..the files will be available on the device apps at home”. This isn’t a solution for the reasons I noted above.
Has anybody found something as a work around? I did see one reference to the ability to create ‘links” between documents stored on the cloud vault and their associated items, but I could not find this available in any of my screens.
I have delayed my upgrade from my “standalone” vault until I can figure this one out. I have always preferred 1PW’s app and have recommended it (and installed it) for many family, friends and co-workers. However I think the company’s response to this functionality lapse so far has been rather cavalier and I have (thus far) not seen anything from 1PW about a functional work around until this functionality is added.

Hello @bpo13! 👋
I'm sorry for the confusion and I would be happy to help clear things up. Are you looking at the items on 1Password.com in your browser? The website version of 1Password is more limited and it currently doesn't support the viewing of attachments which is why you're seeing the error message that you mentioned.
In other words the files did not migrate.
Your attachments are migrated to your account in the cloud. When you install the 1Password 8 app on a brand new device, and add your account to the app, your attachments will download from the cloud and will be available in the app. The issue is that 1Password.com in the browser can't render the attachments but the attachments are still backed up to your account in the cloud and can be viewed using the desktop or mobile app on a new device.
You can download the 1Password 8 app here: 1Password 8
We're working to bring more consistency between the apps and the website version in the future. Let me know if I misunderstood the issue. 🙂

Ok Dave...thanks for your prompt response. So they are there, but cannot be rendered. If that's the case then I'll move ahead w/my migration to 1PW8. One last question. From what I've read, I should download and install 1PW8 without doing anything to my current 1PW7 apps on my Mac & IOS devices (ie..deleting the app or the primary vault) prior to installing Vers.8. Is that correct.
Thanks in advance

Yes, I would recommend downloading 1Password 8 first and confirming that you see all of your items in the new app before removing the old app. You can follow the steps in these guides:
I hope that helps! 🙂

Dave…all done…all devices upgraded to Ver.8…attachments there as you indicated they would be.
Thanks for the support!
