Using Universal Clipboard with 1Password

I've seen a ton of discussion about the Universal Clipboard and it's security implications (handing over a password to a clipboard outside of 1PW control). However, most of these discussions are a few years old. Are there any new discussions or blogposts on how the 1PW team thinks about this and if the suggestion is to still just disable it?

  • Hello @wesleynroberts! 👋

Thanks for the question! In general, when you copy data to the clipboard you run an increased risk that this data will be intercepted since the clipboard is accessible to any app on your device. It's one reason why 1Password offers so many different filling options on various platforms (including browser extensions, support for native filling on iOS, and Universal Autofill on the Mac) to help you fill information rather than having to copy and paste information.

Data transmitted between devices by Apple's Universal Clipboard feature is encrypted by Apple. However, Universal Clipboard does technically copy your password from 1Password and send it over a network connection to another device without 1Password's encryption and security so 1Password leaves the feature disabled by default for the apps.

    I hope that helps! 🙂

Dave, I have enabled the Universal Clipboard Feature in the 1Password application under the Security preference pane, app version 8.10.13 and unfortunately the Universal Clipboard feature is not working - I have tried copying the desired information in the 1Password edit mode and still does not work. What am I missing? Thank you

Have you tried copying the value from the "view" mode rather than when editing an item? If that still doesn't work then are you copying the value from the 1Password for Mac app? Or from a different app? Onto which device and into which app are you pasting the field?

And are you able to copy, and then paste, text from other apps using the Universal Clipboard?

Dave, I did use both the 'view' and 'edit' mode when trying to copy. Yes, I am using a Mac, I was trying to copy from my desktop to my laptop. Only experiencing the issue from within the 1Password App. I have corrected the issue: I toggled the "Use Universal Clipboard..." off and on several times in the 1Password Settings > Security menu. Left the setting off > restarted the iMac > opened 1Password > toggled the Universal Clipboard setting back on. Now it's working fine. Thank you for your prompt response.

  • I'm happy to hear that the feature is working again. 🙂
