Watchtower enhancement request

I would like to suggest an enhancement to Watchtower.

Currently, Watchtower reports on things like:

  • Weak passwords
  • Vulnerable passwords
  • Reused passwords
  • Compromised websites
  • Expiring items
  • Inactive 2FA, and
  • Inactive passkeys.

It displays each of these categories on a tile and provides a link to view or edit the specific items in each category.

But behind the scenes, 1Password also keeps track of password strength, categorizing passwords as:

  • Terrible
  • Weak
  • Fair
  • Good
  • Very good
  • Excellent
  • Fantastic

I would like to see Watchtower surface these categorizations as well as tiles, and provide a link to the items in each category. Doing so would make Watchtower a more valuable dashboard for monitoring the overall health of all your passwords.

Thank you for your openness to enhancements such as this that can help to make 1Password even more valuable for customers.

Dean

  • Hello @thedean! 👋

Thank you for the suggestion! I have some good and bad news, this feature already exists but it currently has a bug that our developers are investigating. Normally you can view passwords by their strength rating by clicking on the Watchtower option in the sidebar of the 1Password for Mac app and then clicking on one of the coloured bars underneath Overall Password Strength:

By clicking on the desired strength rating 1Password will then open a list of items that include passwords that have been judged to be that particular strength. At the moment that doesn't happen because of the issue that I mentioned above but 1Password will still open a list of your items, sorted into different Password strengths, which will allow you to identify the passwords that you should change.

Hopefully the issue is fixed in a future update. 🙂

    Dave:

Thanks for the good news! I was not aware the feature was even there --- probably because if you don't hover over the thermometer graphic, you don't really see counts. It would really be nice if you displayed the counts for each category statically on the thermometer graphic, so the user doesn't need to hover over it to discover it. A feature is only good if you know it's there. Just a thought!

Thank you for the feedback! I can see how displaying a count would make the feature stand out more and I've passed along your request to the team. 🙂

    Dave:

One more thing I just noticed... Your categorization of "weak" passwords should probably be consistent between the two counts. In the attached screen shot, do I have 1 weak password or 4? Clearly both cannot be true at the same time. I suspect 2 different algorithms were used by 2 different development teams. They should be using a consistent algorithm.

    Thanks,
    Dean

  • @thedean

Thank you for pointing out this inconsistency. I've filed an internal issue with our development team so that this can be investigated further. We appreciate you taking the time to help us make 1Password even better. 🙂

    @Dave_1P

After getting your response, I dug a little deeper in the data. I think I know what is going on. When I click on the tile that shows 4 "weak" passwords, it takes me to the detail showing that I have 1 weak password and 3 terrible passwords for a total of 4. I suspect the tile is just adding those 2 categories together. So perhaps the easiest fix is to change the label on the tile from "weak" to "weak/terrible". I hope this helps.

  • Thank you for adding those details, I've passed them along to the team. 🙂
