Starting with version 8.10.8, my 1Password for Mac app doesn't start automatically on startup. I have to start it manually, or click the 1Password icon in my browser, after which everything is normal.

1Password Version: 8.10.8
Extension Version: 2.12.0
OS Version: macOS 13.4.1

  • Hello @fssbob! ๐Ÿ‘‹

I'm sorry that 1Password 8 isn't starting automatically on your Mac, can you tell me a little more about the issue? After you restart your Mac do you expect to see the 1Password icon in your menu bar or do you expect to see 1Password's main window open automatically?

Can you check the following settings:

    1. Open and unlock 1Password for Mac.
    2. Click on 1Password next to the ๏ฃฟ in the menu bar.
    3. Click on Settings.
    4. Click on General.
    5. Make sure that "Keep 1Password in the menu bar" is turned on.
    6. Make sure that "Start at login" is turned on.

I look forward to hearing from you. ๐Ÿ™‚

After restarting my Mac I expect to see the 1Password icon in my menu bar. That's what has stopped happening since the 8.10.8 update.

Once I either start the Application (in Finder) or click on the 1Password Chrome browser icon, the 1Password icon appears in my menu bar--and it stays there until the next time I restart my Mac.

I've verified that both "Keep 1Password in the menu bar" and "Start at login" are turned on.

    Thanks.

Thank you for the reply. We've seen a couple of reports of similar behaviour recently and I'd like to investigate further. I'd like to ask you to create a diagnostics report from your Mac:

    Sending Diagnostics Reports (Mac)

Attach the diagnostics to an email message addressed to support+forum@1password.com.

    With your email please include:

    Please send the entire file.

You should receive an automated reply from our BitBot assistant with a Support ID number. Please post that number here. Thanks very much!

I have a configuration similar to fssbob, and am experiencing the same issue with the 8.10.8 update on both my M1 Mini and M1 MacBook Pro. The previous version started up automatically.

To add to what has already been reported here, I also notice that the 1Password icon briefly flashes in the menu bar upon login, then disappears.

  • @TheVision

I'm sorry that you're also seeing the same issue. We've opened an internal work item to investigate this further. If you're able to then I'd like to ask you to create a diagnostics report from your Mac:

I am also having this same issue with 8.10.8. Would you like for me to send the same information?

Same issue here! It looks like 1P is starting at logon but after while it disappears from the menu bar and I have to start the app manually.

I also have the same problem.
Removing both options, restarting and re-enabling the options did not help.

  • @mpurdin, @Aphex, and @Diedel

I'm sorry that you're all running into the issue as well, I've added you all to the internal tracking item. It doesn't look like we need any more diagnostics reports for now but we'll reach out if our developers request them.

Hopefully this can be fixed soon.

I have the same issue as of 8.10.8 on my 2023 M2 MacBook Pro. On startup, I can see the 1Password flash briefly in the menu bar and then disappear. After that, I have to start 1Password manually. "Start at login" is ticked under preferences, and if I check the system settings, I can see an entry for 1Password under "Login items" and the slider is on. It also says "2 items" for this entry.

Oddly, if I look in the following places, I see no plist file for 1Password:

    /Library/LaunchDaemons/
    /Library/LaunchAgents/
    /Users//Library/LaunchAgents/

Shouldn't there by an entry in one of these places if there is an item under "Login Items" in the system settings?

Anyway, I hope you manage to sort this soon. Seems like a growing number of people are noticing it. I suspect it will start affecting more and more people as they restart their computers after the 8.10.8 releases between June 27-June 29.

I have exactly the same issue as @arthurgaudio. Fresh install of MacOS Ventura 13.4.1 and 1Password 8.10.8 on an M2 MacBook Air.

1Password Quick Access starts up briefly on reboot, stays in the menu bar for a few seconds, and then disappears. When I open 1Password manually, Quick Access stays in the menu bar permanently. But on reboot, it seems like it's closing after just a few seconds.

Note that I don't see any crash reports or problems associated with 1Password in the console. I thought I may have a bad install, but since others are running into this as well, it's pretty clear there's an issue here.

    Same issue.

I had a similar issue with another utility, and a reinstall and restart solved it. Not with 1P.

And I can't add it manually to the Login items list. I select 1P app in the dialog box, hit OK, and nothing shows in the Login list. I've added other applications since the OS upgrade, so it seems a 1P thing.

    On 13.4.1 Mac Studio.

Since I updated 1password for mac to version 9.10.8 it happens that, when I start my two mac computers (a mac studio m1 max and a macbook pro 14" m2 pro), the 1password icon in the menu bar first appears for a few seconds and then it disappears by itself. If I start 1password manually, the icon reappears and does not go away (until the computer is restarted) and everything works correctly. I tried to install the 8.10.9 developer version and the problem is not It shows up.
Is this a bug? Has anyone experienced the same problem?

The operating system is macOS Ventura 13.4.1

I also write here the post I sent by opening another discussion. Sorry, I didn't realize this thread already existed.

Same issue here on my M1 MacBook Air with macOS Ventura 13.4.1 and 1Password 8.10.8 installed. My hope was / is that this issue disappears with one of the next updates. But till now it didn't disappear.

Maybe this is the same issue here?

  • Hello everyone,

I'm sorry to hear that 1Password is closing when you first start your Mac. Our development team is aware of this issue and are working on a fix. I recommend keeping 1Password updated so that you receive the fix as soon as it is released:

For now, as a temporary workaround, please open 1Password for Mac from your Application's folder after you restart your Mac. Manually opening the app will leave it running until the next time that you restart your Mac. We hope to get a permanent fix out as soon as possible.

Same problem here with both my iMac and my MBP. I can start 1password manually, but it does not happen automatically at system startup. Tis is with Ventura 10.4.1 (I just upgraded both machines from Monterey in the past 48 hours). 1Password version 8.10.8

  • Thanks @wolfy and my apologies for the trouble. Hopefully, we can get this one behind us soon. I've added your report to our internal tracker.

Looks like the problem is solved after last update :-)

  • @Aphex

Thank you for confirming that the latest update resolved the issue for you. There are some changes in how 1Password detects when the app should be closed that should improve the situation.

Can everyone in this thread please update to version 8.10.9: How to keep 1Password up to date

If you're still seeing the issue on the latest version then let me know. ๐Ÿ™‚

I did not follow this thread for some time waiting for an update.I cannot confirm the fix, I am on 8.10.12 and still 1Password does not start automatically after I start my Mac. Sometime it does. Most of the time, it doesn't.

Ok. My issue seems to be resolved. After reinstalling 1Password it seems to work. Not sure if the issue was solved by reinstalling or by version 8.10.13.
