1Password jumps to first space

I'm a heavy user of Spaces on macOS, and 1Password seems to have trouble with it. When using Quick Access or even the browser extension in Brave, 1Password will jump me away from my current space, to the first space, pretty frequently. I've seen this post about weirdness with Quick Access, but this is happening beyond just that. Seems like this is one of lots of paper cuts with 1Password 8 on the Mac.

1Password Version: 8.10.9
Extension Version: 2.13.0
OS Version: 13.4.1(c)
Browser: Brave

  • Hello @cyberskier! 👋

I'm sorry for the impact to your workflow, our developers are investigating an issue where 1Password is opening on the wrong macOS space and I've added your report there.

or even the browser extension in Brave

Can you tell me a little more about this? Is this happening when you fill a login? Or when you try to edit an item from 1Password in Brave? Are there any consistent reproduction steps that you can provide?

I tried to reproduce it, and was able to do it once using the keyboard shortcut (Cmd-), but the next three times (after I force-reloaded the page to get a blank login), it didn't jump spaces. So it seems hit or miss.

I just had it happen again in Brave. I was using the extension in Brave to enter credentials on a site, was prompted to authenticate with touch ID (I have the external Apple Keyboard with fingerprint sensor), and it jumped me to the first space when I placed my finger on the sensor to authenticate.

I've seen this same behavior when using TouchId to unlock the Firefox extension. It appears to jump to a space with an open Safari window, not always the first space. If the 1password extension in Safari is disabled then this does not happen, but that significantly reduces the 1password functionality in Safari. I recently started from a clean install and this happens on the new system as well.

Thank you for the additional information. So that we can investigate further, and identify whether you're affected by one of the known issues surrounding macOS Spaces, I'd like to ask you to reproduce the issue one more time, note the time and date when it occurred, and create a diagnostics report from your Mac:

    Sending Diagnostics Reports (Mac)

Attach the diagnostics to an email message addressed to support+forum@1password.com.

    With your email please include:

    Please send the entire file.

You should receive an automated reply from our BitBot assistant with a Support ID number. Please post that number here. Thanks very much!

I tried to reproduce it this morning, and of course I couldn't. Next time it happens, I'll send a report.

  • @chaptastic

Thank you for sending in the diagnostics report. The team will review it for information that will help our developers improve the situation and get back to you as soon as possible.

    @cyberskier

Thank you, I'll keep an eye on this thread for your next reply. 🙂

    Hello everyone,

Just wondering if there’s any update on this, as it’s happening quite consistently for me as well.

In case it helps, here are the steps and conditions that seem to trigger the problem for me:

    1. Using a browser other than Safari (I’m using Arc), but with Safari running in the background. 1Password extensions are installed in both Safari and Arc.
    2. 1Password is locked. The problem doesn’t appear for me if 1Password is already unlocked.
    3. I’m unlocking 1Password with my Apple Watch or via fingerprint verification. (Not sure if this is a necessary condition to reproduce.)

If Safari is running in a different space then Arc, my Mac jumps to that space. Sometimes happens as soon as the authentication dialog appears but usually after I authenticate.

If Safari is running in the same space as Arc, it jumps briefly to the foreground and then yields to Arc again. Sometimes this happens more than once, and sometimes Safari just remains in the foreground.

As far as I’ve been able to tell, turning off the 1Password extension in Safari fixes the problem.

This is happening on both my main machine running Ventura 13.5 and my test machine running the Sonoma developer beta.

I'm sorry that you're running into a similar issue. We've been able to intermittently reproduce the issue here on our end and an internal work item has been filed with our development team to investigate further.

If you're willing, could you send in a diagnostics report from your Mac the next time that you see the issue? It can give our developers more information and clues to work with:
