Category Reveal?

Dear 1Password Helpers,

Forgive me if I've missed something, but --

Let's say I joined a gym called Boggles Gym and they gave me a physical ID card. I took a picture of the card and saved it in 1Password as an attachment. But I don't remember what Category I saved it in. Could be Documents maybe, or Memberships.

I can see it in All Categories of course. But when I click on it there, I can't tell which Category it's in.

Right?

Or can I?

As far as I can see, I'd have to click each individual Category, then sift through it alphabetically, to find where I put my Boggles card. I guess I could write a note saying it's in (to use an example) "Memberships," but that seems like a bit of a nuisance to have to do.

Please let me know if I've missed something obvious. Otherwise, take this as a little suggestion for further improvement.

Hoping all's well with you folks Up North,

-Markbot

  • Hello @markbot! 👋

Thanks for the question! You can identify the category that an item is in by looking at the item's icon. Each category will have a distinct default icon:

Beyond that, can you tell me a little more about why you're looking to find a specific item's category so that I can pass along your use case to the team? 🙂

    Thanks, Dave.

OK, every category has its distinct icon, but where do you find the category icon for a particular item when your in "All Categories" view?

To answer your question, sometimes I forget what I named an item (ah, yes, it happens to poor me) so the first thing I would do (after sorting by "Date Created" if I just added it) is examine the category where I most likely would have put it.

Also, since categories are required, it just seems to me that being able to readily see an item's category is, well, kind of essential. This could be accomplished by highlighting the item's Category when the item is selected. This actually happens in Category view (where it is actually redundant) but not in "All Items/All Categories" view.

(Come to think of it, "All Items" and "All Categories" appear to perform exactly the same function.)

I'm thinking of something like this:

This brings up a couple of more "wish list" additions:

    1. Would be nice if I could create my own categories, i.e., customize categories. I find it bit odd, for instance, that "Wireless Router" has its own category, but not other hardware items, such as phones, computers, tablets, printers. Most people only have a single wireless router, but everyone has more than one device. I tend to stash all my hardware under the "Wireless Router" category. It's a bit awkward but, eh, it's a workaround.

    2. Would be nice to be able to change item categories.

    3. The category "Software Licenses" might be usefully changed to, oh, "Software Licenses & Subscriptions," since many software products we love are subscribed to, rather than licensed. <wink!>

And while on the wish list:

    1. 'Twould be really great if you could do text searches in all fields, including notes, rather than just the item names. I'm thinking along the lines of the Contacts app in macOS, where searching on notes is a built in feature.

    2. And also great would be a template for telephone field additions. So, for example, you would tell 1Password to store phone numbers as, for example, (999) 555-1234. There are templates for Dates and Month/Year -- they're great.

Thank you, as always, for entertaining these ideas. I hope I haven't missed something obvious, or are asking for a feature already in 1Password.

Best regards from Down South (Boston),

P.S. I notice that the Comment editor does some formatting automatically, such as numbering. I just noticed the icons at the top of the Comment box, which appear do MarkDown editing — awesome. I've also down a MarkDown of my own here and there, for emphasis — and fun!

Thanks for clarifying. I can see how it would be useful to see the category of an item when viewing the item itself and I've filed a feature request on your behalf with our product team.

    1. Would be nice if I could create my own categories, i.e., customize categories. I find it bit odd, for instance, that "Wireless Router" has its own category, but not other hardware items, such as phones, computers, tablets, printers. It's a bit awkward but, eh, it's a workaround.

Creating custom category templates is an often requested feature and I've let the product team know that you'd like to see this as well. For now, you can use Secure Notes to keep track of things that don't neatly fit into one of the Categories available in 1Password. Secure Notes are very flexible and you can add custom fields to organize the information that you add: Making the most of Secure Notes

Set a Secure Note item up the way you want it, then save that as an empty "template". Then you can duplicate that item (Command - D) and fill in the fields. You can group those items together by using Tags. You can even add custom icons to those items.

And also great would be a template for telephone field additions. So, for example, you would tell 1Password to store phone numbers as, for example, (999) 555-1234. There are templates for Dates and Month/Year -- they're great.

1Password already allows you to add a phone field to an item:

    1. Open and unlock 1Password for Mac.
    2. Click on and then Edit an item.
    3. Click + add more.
    4. Scroll down and click phone.
    5. Enter the phone number and save the item.

Let me know if I misunderstood or if this isn't working for you.

While I can't promise anything, I've filed individual feature requests for the other suggestions in your post as well. The product team will look through the filed feature requests as they're planning our roadmap and future updates to 1Password.

Thank you for the suggestions and for helping us make 1Password even better. 🙂

    Thank you again, Dave.

    re: Phone Numbers

I can add a phone number, but if I type in 8175239491, the field will simply record it as that -- a string of text. What I would like the phone number field to do is format and record it as (817) 523-9491. This is kind of like what Apple's Contacts apps do.

re: Secure Notes as a template

Ah, this is a great idea, and thank you for those helpful links.

And I kind of do this already with our family's cars, to which I just added my first ever Tag, "Cars." (Tags almost seem like a category marker themselves.) But it never occurred to me to create and save a template note, then duplicate it and fill in the fields. What I do now (if, for example, we get a new car) is to duplicate one of the notes for an existing cars, then fill in the fresh data.

    re: Feature Requests

I know you folks work hard to improve 1Password, and incorporating any given request is a complex process, with many factors to weigh. There's a lot on your plate already.

I hope my own suggestions are helpful. They're just that — suggestions, and I appreciate your considering them.

I'm looking forward, for instance, to the coming (so they say) world of Passkeys, which you have documented here:

    https://1password.com/product/passkeys

This is, I'm sure, keeping you busy -- if not up at night.

    Best regards,

Thank you for clarifying. I can see how having the phone field automatically format a phone number would be useful and I've filed a feature request with the team internally on your behalf.

Your suggestions are very helpful, we're always interested in improving how 1Password helps folks in their daily lives. And stay tuned to our blog for exciting passkey announcements in the near future. 😊
