How to see passkey sites in WatchTower?

I see that passkeys are now in the production release as of the browser version 2.15 as announced (https://releases.1password.com/b5x/stable/#whats-new). The announcement indicates that we can "start by finding a site that supports passkeys. You can do this by browsing our passkey directory, or by opening Watchtower in 1Password, which now flags all of your existing logins that could be updated with a passkey."

I have the Windows production release of 1password 8.10.15 (current as of today) and the Watchtower does not mention Passkeys. I signed into the web at my.1password.com and my Watchtower also does not mention passkeys. Is there a trick or setting that I am missing?

How do I see passkey supported sites in the Watchtower?

1Password Version: 8.10.15
Extension Version: 2.15.0
OS Version: Windows 11
Browser: Chrome

  • Hi @RiversideKid - I'm sorry to hear that you're not seeing passkey available alerts in Watchtower as expected. If there's a particular site for which you're expecting to see a passkey available alert, can you check your Ignored Alerts section in Watchtower and see if there's an ignored alert for that site? Does restoring the alert cause the passkey available alert to display as expected?

If not, you can try creating a test Login item with either https://google.com/ or https://ebay.com/ in the website field, to see if you get a passkey available alert there. You'll also need to enter something into the username and password fields when creating this test item in order to trigger the alert.

Let me know how you get on and we'll be here to help with next steps.

I am seeing the same problem - no Watchtower alerts for "passkey available", windows version 8.10.15

I created a test login with https://google.com in the website field (username and password fields filled in). This does not show ANY watchtower alert in the windows 1password.

I also created a test login with https://accounts.google.com in the website field (username and password fields filled in). This shows a watchtower alert for "two-factor authentication" in the windows 1password. It does NOT show the "passkey available" alert that i was hoping for.

Neither of the test logins show up on my watchtower ignored alerts list.

I doubt that I ever ignored an alert, to test this I ignored one and then was able to see 'ignored alters' in the Watchtower, but once I restored that one alter, the option vanished.

I was able to set up a passkey at https://ebay.com, so the browser extension works.

What I am not able to see is a Watchtower section for available Passkey sites as described in the release notes from September 13.

The question remains; How do I see the Watchtower section for Passkeys as described? (I have only 1 passkey (ebay) and I have bunches of entries in my 1password where I see that passkeys are working via the https://passkeys.directory and I do not have a passkey so there should be quite a list on my 1password Watchtower.)

can confirm I don't get an alert in watch tower for items either besides there just being a GitHub passkey supported shown on the item itself, I don't have anything in ignored either.

for example I had a banner show the passkey was supported on GitHub but when I moved to my Google item, there was no banner despite Google supporting Passkeys.

    +1

Not only +1 to the OP's post, but the sites I set up with passkeys never seem to log in with the passkey and instead use whatever previous login I used. When looking at the passkey setup guides it appears you are supposed to be prompted for your biometric data when setting up (unless 1password uses whatever is already stored on the device?). I'm never prompted for biometrics at login, well, unless it's a sign on with a 3rd party provider prompt.

Will probably remove the few passkeys I've setup so far as the feature doesn't seem 'ready' for use, unless this is beginner stupidity on my part (highly likely).

Update... In the 1password chrome plugin, I now see a new "passkey available" message inside a purple box above the password details when I select certain passwords. This is NOT shown in the windows app or web app.

Watchtower results still don't show passkey info, so I'd have to select every password individually to look for this message.

Also, the message is not shown if the password is weak - instead you get a red box with a "vulnerable password" message.

Hopefully this is a sign of good things to come.

  • Hey folks - @RiversideKid, @1PassForMe, @CJStylesOrg, @Ind3X

Today we released an update to the production release of 1Password for Windows (8.10.16). Let me know if you can now see the Passkeys section in Watchtower.

If not, ensure that you have this setting enabled by navigating to Settings > Privacy > "Check for passkeys"

    Looking forward to your responses.

@AliH1P it is still missing, even after toggling that and force closing the desktop app and relaunching.

    Still having an issue...

    I updated to 8.10.16
I verified Settings > Privacy > "Check for passkeys" was enabled

On the watchtower main screen I don't see a box regarding passkeys.

On the watchtower screen I click on "Show Ignored Alerts" and I do see "Passkeys available" on the ignored alerts dropdown menu. But, When I select this from the dropdown... it shows nothing - "Watchtower didn't find any login items with passkeys available."

Chrome plugin does continue to show "passkey available" message for a test google.com website login.

    Issue fixed for me...

I had a second issue with offline items that weren't updating. When 1password customer service had me remove + replace the windows sqlite file, the passkey alerts showed up under the ignored alerts list. When I clicked restore alerts the "passkeys available" box showed up on the main watchtower screen.

  • Thanks for the update @1PassForMe. I'm glad to hear you're now seeing the Passkeys section in Watchtower.

@CJStylesOrg I'm sorry to hear that you're still experiencing this issue. Could you let me know whether you see anything in your ignored alerts now (after the update)? If not, we could proceed with a database reset as that seems to have worked for @1PassForMe.

@AliH1P hey i've fixed it, after powering off my laptop and leaving it alone for a bit and powering it on again, it was fixed and i am now able to see the passkeys in watchtower. this also includes the banners within the item indicating that passkeys are available.

  • Awesome @CJStylesOrg, happy to hear that everything is working now!

Also fixed for me @AliH1P. Well, seeing that section in watchtower is, still unable to get passkeys working to log into a site and always prompted for whatever my previous login method was. Is there a way to give priority to the passkeys login instead of 3rd party login?

Thanks for the update @Ind3X, glad to hear the issue is fixed for you as well.

still unable to get passkeys working to log into a site and always prompted for whatever my previous login method was. Is there a way to give priority to the passkeys login instead of 3rd party login?

Is this occurring on a specific website? If so, could you share the URL so I could take a look? Some websites will have a "Sign in with a Passkey" button or you may need to select a different login method. This will vary based on the website that you're on.

It's also important to note that 1Password will continue to offer to fill a password even after creating a passkey for a given website (if you still have an item with a password saved for that site). If you prefer to not see password suggestions for items where you've saved a passkey, I would recommend saving the passkey as a new item and archiving the original login item.

For further context, when saving a passkey for an existing item, 1Password in your browser will offer the following options :

    • "New item", a new login will be created in 1Password for the passkey
    • "Update existing", a passkey field will be added to the existing Login item.

Either selection will not remove the original password field so you'll continue seeing your account password being offered. Archiving the login item will prevent 1Password in your browser from suggesting the original login item.

Let me know if this helps.

@AliH1P Thanks for the suggestions and guidance. I was seeing the issue on pretty much every website I had set up the passkey but I've just generated them again after the update and it appears to be working as expected now, even though the update didn't appear to target issues with passkey usage, only the watchtower issue reported by the OP. I will let you know if I come across any problems again and mention the sites where this occurs (probably in another thread to avoid hijacking this one).

    Thank you.

  • You're most welcome @Ind3X! It's great that everything is working as expected now.

We'll be here to help should you encounter any further issues 👍

It "works" on my Ubuntu, Android and iOS clients and my work Windows 11 (fresh setup). It does not work on my iMac or my personal Windows 11 machine (both have been running / have been updated from previous versions)...

Matthewpackwood; Please verify that your iMac has upgraded to version 8.10.16. I can see the WatchTowwer section on my macOS Ventura 13.5.1, my Windows 11 22H2 computer as well as my Android 13 Pixel 7.

I have not verified that only 46 sites offer passkeys out of my 1255 password sites stored in 1password, but there is a Passkey section. I can assume that 1password is using a database that is going to be updated on a schedule going forward. The important thing right now is that we see the result of that database.

  • Thanks @RiversideKid - you can find an index of websites/apps that offer passkey support here: Passkeys.directory. This will be updated continuously as more websites/apps offer passkeys support.

@MatthewPackwood I'm sorry to hear you're still encountering issues. If you've verified that you're currently running 8.10.16, could you send us an email message at support+windows@1password.comso we can take a deeper look at what's going on?

I'd like to ask you to attach a diagnostics report to the email message: Sending Diagnostics Reports (Windows)

With your email please include a link to this thread and your forum username.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

This morning I was prompted to update my 1password Windows application and now the passkey section has vanished from my Windows computer. My macOS computer still shows passkeys available. The Settings > Privacy > Watchtower still has 'check for passkeys' checked. (I unchecked and rechecked to no avail. I still have version 8.10.16 so I don't know what the update was. I show "1Password for Windows 8.10.16 (81016047)"

Is there a bug in the Windows client?

An app reset solved the issue. Make sure you are signed in on another device or have your secrete key stored elsewhere, like the 1password emergency kit (PDF File) handy.

    1Password for Windows 8.10.18 (81018040)
    Windows 10.
All other devices running their latest releases.
I was suffering with most of the above on an Acer laptop, but all my other PC/iOS devices were working okay.
So I applied the Database Reset, and this fixed my problem, just thought I would mention it, in case its relevant.
    Thanks for your help.

I'm seeing this as not working on any device. Only been using 1Password for a few days, imported all my passwords from various other services. Running the latest version of the app and browser plugins on Mac, iOS and iPadOS. I have a github account password and 2FA stored in 1Password, Github offer Passkeys, I have CHeck for Passkeys ticked in Privacy settings yet Watchtower is not telling me Passkey is available on Github, or any other website for that matter.

  • Hello @jayhouse,

Thanks for your message. I'm sorry you're having troubles with Watchtower detecting items with available passkeys.

I ran a quick test by adding a test login for Github (https://github.com/) and the passkey banner appeared immediately:

Could you confirm the URL you have listed for this item and does changing help?

Additionally, now that you imported all of your data, can you confirm it's available to you when you are signing in to 1Password.com? I'd like to suggest the above noted steps of resetting your database on one device to see if it helps.

I'm looking forward to your reply.

    Hi @ag_mike_d

Thanks for the reply, so the url is exactly the same as the one in your example. I have also just tried the database reset on my Mac app yet it's still not telling me Passkey is available.
