Cannot unlock 1Password with Apple Watch

I am using the 1Password plugin in Safari and when I try to unlock it, I get a pop that tells me to unlock it using my Apple Watch or I can click on the Use Master Password.

I never get a popup on my phone to approve the login.

I am a new 1Password user, so I have never tried this before.

1Password Version: 8.10.16
Extension Version: 2.15.1
OS Version: macOS 14.0
Browser: Safari

  • The pop up message would appear on the watch face. You can see an example in the below support article. Do you see that?

Also, welcome to the family! 🙂

I have 2 Macs. A MacBook Pro and an Mac Mini. I get the popup on my MacBook Pro, but not on the Mac mini.

Turning off auto-unlock on MacOS, rebooting, and turning it back on worked! Thank you for the link.

  • I'm happy to hear that helped. Have a great weekend.

Seems the problem is not over yet. I went to my MacBook Pro about 15 minutes ago, and I could only unlock 1Password with TouchID or the password. Then I went to my Mac mini and I could only unlock with a password (I don't have a keyboard with TouchID). I quit out of 1Password and launched it again on both devices. On the MacBook Pro, I again could only unlock with TouchID. The Mac mini required my password.

I rebooted the Mac mini and then I could unlock 1Password with my phone. I have not rebooted the MacBook Pro yet to see if that fixes the issue.

Not sure if the fault here is with MacOS Sonoma, 1Password or some combination of the two.

It sounds like you're experiencing an issue that started for some back with the introduction of Ventura. I'd need a diagnostics report to confirm, but usually the sign is the the watch will disappear from within 1Password settings and after some period of time it will return. I've seen an average of 14 minutes to as long as an hour. We've reported this to Apple as a bug. I've talked with several folks and the trouble has extended into Sonoma.

Would you like to submit a diagnostics report from your device? If so,

    1. Open 1Password.
    2. Press command and comma. The 1Password preferences will open.
    3. Tap Advanced.
    4. Click Send Diagnostics.
    5. Click Reveal to locate the report in your downloads folder.

Attach the diagnostics to an email message addressed to support+forum@1password.com.

This seems to isolated to the Mac mini, where I don't have TouchID.

In 1Password on that machine, I don't even see the option to enable Apple Watch in the preferences. On my MacBook Pro, I see a checkbox for TouchID and for Apple Watch.

Interesting thing is the 1Password plugin for Firefox on the Mac mini works with the Apple Watch every time. But the 1Password app and the 1Password plugin for Safari seems to be hit or miss.

I'll submit the report. Give me a few minutes.

Sounds like there isn't a lot you can do, since it's a MacOS issue. It's just annoying on the Mac mini, since I don't have a keyboard with TouchID.

I see that my colleague sent you a suggestion over email, please reply to him there. To prevent having the same discussion in two places at once I'm closing this thread.
