Safari extension not reliably unlocking

For more than four weeks now I have problems with the Safari extension not unlocking reliably. I have not been able to accurately narrow the circumstances down but it seems like the issues increased when upgrading to macOS Sonoma and can sometimes be triggered by having multiple Safari windows open in different Safari profiles. Though I am having the same issues on another machine not yet on Sonoma, though they are less often.

The behaviour that's bugging me is that the extension will not unlock at all. Clicking on the icon in the browser bar does nothing, same goes for clicking on the unlock icon inside of a password-field. The only temporary solution is to force-quit Safari with CMD+Q, unlocking 1Password while Safari is closed and then re-opening the browser. However, it is only a matter of luck for how many minutes or hours the extension keeps working.

As I have set my 1Password application to lock itself after 1 min of inactivity, the problems are more obvious for me than it may be in other circumstances. I am not able nor willing to change this time though and expect the extension to work reliably again.

1Password Version: 8.10.18 (81018040)
Extension Version: 2.17.1 2170010
OS Version: 14.1.1 (23B81)
Browser: Safari

+1, these issues have been persistent with the Safari extension for some time and it’s about time they get resolved fully.

I have similar issues in Arc (a Chromium browser)

I'm sorry that you're running into reoccurring issues with unlocking 1Password in Safari on your Mac. The team and I are here to help until everything is working properly again. As a first step can you please update 1Password for Mac to version 8.10.20: How to keep 1Password up to date

Then, I'd like you to do the following:

    1. Close all open web browsers.
    2. Right-click on the 1Password icon at the top of your Mac's screen and then click Quit. Wait until the icon disappears.
    3. Double-click on 1Password from your Mac's Applications folder.
    4. Open your web browser.

I understand that you've tried similar steps in the past, if the issue returns again then I'd like to request the following to investigate further:

Attach both files to an email message addressed to support+forum@1password.com.

    With your email please include:

You should receive an automated reply from our BitBot assistant with a Support ID number. Please post that number here. Thanks very much!

I'm sorry that you're also running into issues. Can you tell me a little more about the specific behaviour that you're seeing on your Mac? Are you also unable to unlock the 1Password extension? Does the desktop extension still unlock properly?

Can you share the version of macOS that you're using and whether you've enabled, and are using, profiles for Safari?

Hi, i have the same problem.

I have carried out all the steps as indicated, but the extension cannot be opened.

Curiously, the extension says that the password is incorrect after I have disconnected from 1Password Desktop.

I have tried several times! No problem in the normal 1 password desktop version.

@Dave_1P I'm having Safari extension issues as well, but I"m currently on the Sonoma 14.2 beta (23C5055b). I've been having issues for a couple of weeks, but thought maybe this new beta release would help, but it did not. What is the best way to get info/help on that?

  • Hey @mupdx,

I'm sorry to hear about the trouble. I recommend sending an email to support+forum@1Password.com so that our support team can help you.

    With your email please include:

After emailing in, you'll receive a reply from BitBot, our friendly robot assistant with a Support ID that looks something like [#ABC-12345-678]. Post that here, and I’ll be able to locate your message and make sure it’s gotten to the right place. I look forward to hearing back from you.

@Purplediva, there was a known bug with macOS 14.2 beta, let's try to toggle app integration and re-sync your account. Here's how:

    1. Open Safari.
    2. Right-click the 1Password icon in Safari's toolbar and select "Settings"..
    3. In the General section, disable "Integrate this extension with the 1Password desktop app".
    4. In the Accounts & Vaults section, click the ( ⋮ ) three dots to sign out of your account(s). (This will be unavailable if "Integrate with 1Password app" is still enabled)
    5. Click "+ Sign in to a new account" to sign back in to the 1Password account.
    6. Once you've signed in, a small box will appear on the top right corner of the page, click "Add" to add your account to the 1Password extension.

Before continuing with the next steps, I'd like to check if the extension unlocks before we re-enable integration. At this point, I'd like you to click the 1Password extension to unlock it. Let me know how that goes, then continue with the next steps to re-enable integration:

    1. In Safari, right-click the 1Password icon in Safari's toolbar and select "Settings".
    2. In the "General" section, enable "Integrate this extension with the 1Password desktop app".
    3. Open the 1Password desktop app.
    4. Click "1Password" on the macOS menu bar and select "Settings".
    5. In the General section, ensure "Keep 1Password in the menu bar" is checked.
    6. In the Browser section toggle off, then re-toggle on the "Connect with 1Password in the browser" setting.

Once that’s done, click the 1Password icon in the browser to unlock it.

Let me know how that goes.

@EvonG1P Thank you! This worked beautifully! Once I signed out, then went back unlock it and re-enable the integration, It found my account from the desktop app. I've quit safari, and come back in, checked a couple of sites, and all seems to be well now for me. Thank you!

  • Hey @Purplediva,

On behalf of Evon, you are most welcome!

Let us know if there is anything else we can help with at all.
