Importing from a Bitwarden vault fails "No codec found"
I'm switching from Bitwarden to 1Password and after uploading my encrypted .json file to 1Password's "Import from Bitwarden" tool I get the following error after clicking next on the Upload page.
Unable to import.
no codec found to encode value in union type (Array | undefined)
Error Code:
Session: Removed in case this string is sensitive information.
Time: 2024-06-11T01:31:27.394Z
I followed instructions here and my Bitwarden account is using the proper KDF algorithm stated at the bottom of the page.
In the meantime I imported my Bitwarden vault via .csv but it does not include all the information as the .json file, such as creation date and previously used passwords.

Please send the session ID and any other details to
support+forum@1password.com
. Be sure to use the email address tied to the account in question. Also may I ask do you have any passkeys enabled? If so please try the import with them disabled temporarily. I'm thinking that may be the issue.0 -
I removed the one passkey that I had but the import still fails. Unfortunately Bitwarden does not have a way to find logins with passkeys. You can export a .json file and search for "CredentialId" so I checks and can confirm that I have zero passkeys in my vault.
Will follow up via e-mail.

I am having the same issue, what is the fix?

I'm sorry for the trouble with migrating your items to 1Password. Our team just released a series of improvements to the Bitwarden importer that should avoid the issues that have been reported to us so far:
Fix a number of bugs in the Bitwarden importer that would cause valid encrypted JSON exports to be rejected. {26893}
Can you try importing your items again? Let me know if you still see the same issue. 🙂

Thanks @Mendelson9 for the update. They sent me the issue number as well when I mentioned your situation.

I am having the same issue. Should I open a new thread here in the forum?

Same here - encrypted bitwarden json file with a password!

The error says "Unsupported Bitwarden Export", exactly as this comment

It seems like your message is different. More around the encryption method. That said I can see mentions of this same message in our internal work on the codec too. I'd play it safe and talk to my colleagues that specialize on the subject. If nothing else it will cost you just a couple of minutes to touch base with the team. Perhaps they have additional ideas I am not aware of.

Are there any updates on this?
My understanding of this line:If nothing else it will cost you just a couple of minutes to touch base with the team
was that it would take some very short time to get back with some advice

It was a reference to sending the email. You'll spend a few minutes composing so we can get the technical team to further review your problem if you happen to have encountered something unknown.
In short please email my technical counterparts. They'll be able to look into this in more detail.

I am having the same issue, also no further information than the error message specified by @RuslanI. I can see a bunch of error logs in the browser console, though:
action/import/bitwarden#parseBitwardenExport failed to decode: Invalid value null supplied to : pipe(json, FileFormat)/items: ReadonlyArray<Item>/562: Item/notes: string
(seemingly printed once for every item that failed to import). My Bitwarden instance is on version 2024.6.1.1 -
I'm having the same issue as Lorthirk

I've pinged the team for any news. Emailing your logs to support is also an option. If you'd like to do that please use

Hey folks the team says this should be resolved. Can I ask you to check the import once again?

No dice unfortunately:
This was with a new export I just created, password encrypted
Also, these are a pair of errors in the console:

Can you submit those to the technical team? They thought they had resolved this, but by the looks of it, they may not have succeeded. If you'd be so kind as to email them with those details it would be helpful. I can also link this discussion if you could provide me the support ID you receive via return email.

I have the exact same issue as @andrewmzhang has. The technical team is already taking a look right?

@justjoostnl I was told by the technical team that they're working on a fix. In the meantime they recommended I try to import as CSV. I'm just going to wait for the official bitwarden import to work since I have a lot of passwords

Yes, indeed they are.
