Can I open sites from extension in SAME tab/window?

When working in Safari and/or Chrome, I often use 1Password like bookmarks. Say I have Google open in a tab and I want to go to my banking. I'll open 1Password and select my banking. It opens a new tab. I would like it to redirect the current tab to my banking. Is this possible?

1Password Version: 8.10.36
Extension Version: 2.25.1
OS Version: macOS 14.5
Browser: Safari

  • Hello, @shan_man. Thank you for writing in.

When selecting the "Open & Fill" option, 1Password in the browser will always open a new tab. However, I'd be happy to submit a feature request on your behalf to our Product team to consider this feature for future releases of 1Password.

Would you be able to provide more feedback as to why you'd like to be able to open and fill items in the currently active tab and how important this feature is to your workflow?

I look forward to your reply.

    Hello @EvonG1P,

Thanks for the offer to file a feature request. I'd appreciate that!

As I mentioned, I use 1Password like bookmarks.

Let's say I want to browse Wikipedia. My steps:
    1. Launch Chrome -> Opens my default page (google.com)
    2. Open the Bookmarks menu and select Wikipedia --> Current tab switches to Wikipedia

Instead, let's say I want to do my banking. My steps:
    1. Launch Chrome -> Opens my default page (google.com)
    2. Open 1Password for my banking and select "Open and Fill"

Expected: Current tab switches to banking, and is autofilled
Actual: New tab opens with banking and is autofilled. I have to now close the original tab.

Now let's say I've finished my banking and I want to move to my email. With a normal bookmark, I could simply select my email website and the current tab would switch to the new page. With 1Password, I'm always forced to a new tab.

Does this help? For what it's worth, I believe an earlier version of 1Password worked the way I'm describing. I don't recall how far back that was though.

    Thank,
    Shannon

    Thanks @EvonG1P !

Interestingly, I just discovered something wonderful:
I've been a Safari user for some time, but I'm just in the process of switching to Chrome. On Chrome, launching the browser shows a tab with the "New Tab" page. Likewise, opening a new tab shows the "New Tab" page. Finally, clicking "Home" goes to the "New Tab" page. (I'm sure some of this is customizable). When I select "Open and Fill" from the 1Password extension while the "New Tab" page is showing, it works like I prefer -> the existing tab loads the site. Excellent!

When I wrote up my explanation above, I mentioned using Chrome but I was actually using Safari. I would appreciate if you could update any ticket you've filed to correct my error.

In summary, I'd still like to see the enhancement described above be made for Safari. For Chrome, things are better (when starting from the "New Tab" page) but it would still be nice to be able to repurpose an existing tab.

    Thanks!
