Migrating data and other questions

Hello,

I've been reading your Migrate 1Password Account article.

From: Step 1: Sign up or join an account:

During sign-up, you’ll be asked to create an account password. Use the password you already use with 1Password. After you’re done creating your account, you’ll see your Home page.

Important

The password you use to create your 1Password account is the one you will use to unlock 1Password after you migrate your data.

Is the account password the same as the master password?

Definitions of various vaults.

I'm currently using 1Password 6 (no subscription / membership) with a standalone vault, or at least I thought it was. According the your glossary, a Standalone vault is a:

Vault outside your 1Password account stored locally on your device and not automatically synced. Can be synced with iCloud, Dropbox, or the WLAN server.

I use Dropbox to sync between devices. However when I go to my preferences, the vault is listed as a Primary vault. According to the glossary, the Primary vault is:

Default vault if you don’t have a 1Password account. Created when you set up 1Password. The password for this vault unlocks your other vaults (even if you add a 1Password account later).

According to the preferences, I guess I technically have a Primary vault, but in my setup also fits a Standalone vault. Can you please clarify this?

Thank you!

  • Hey @ScarySulley

Is the account password the same as the master password?

Correct, the master password is the old term used to refer to the account password in some situations. It often refers to the previous standalone or 3rd party syncing, such as you might find in 1Password 6. You likely still see it referenced in that version of the application. Nowadays, with 1Password 8, we use the term account password to better illustrate that someone is using the password they use on 1Password to unlock 1Password 8.

I use Dropbox to sync between devices.

You would have a standalone setup in some terms. Because you sync, I'd call it 3rd party sync. Folks, myself included, can sometimes use the term standalone for anything that is not membership-related. The main reason for that is people found the term 3'rd party sync an even more confusing term. Generally, if we have questions, our first question may be: do you have a vault named Primary, and do you sync your data? If so, how?

the vault is listed as a Primary vault.

Correct, this is indicative of a nonmembership setup. I would expect your vault to be named that, considering memberships use the name Personal or Private.

Devices or situations where the user does not sync their data would still have the name Primary.

    I hope this helps.
