Complicated move from 6 to 8

My wife and I have been sharing a v.6.8.9 account for years, syncing to Dropbox but at some point the sync quit working, so now we have multiple passwords on multiple devices. For example, on my Delta Airlines account, the only device that worked for me was my iPhone; my iPad & MacBook Pro didn't. I finally realized that I must have changed the password on my phone at some point and the other devices weren't getting updated because of the sync not working.

She has the same 3 devices as I do, so we have 6 keychains spread across the devices. I'm assuming I'll do the upgrade to my MBP first and then work from there, and I see that there's a utility for deleting duplicate accounts, but is there a way to determine which one has the right password and just trash the duplicates? I assume they'll repopulate/sync so we'll have all info on all devices.

Any thoughts on how to do this most seamlessly? And what questions should I be asking but haven't thought of them yet?

1Password Version: 6.8.9
Extension Version: not installed
OS Version: macOS 14.6.1
Browser: Safari

The duplicate detector would be unable to determine which password would be correct and which one is no longer valid. The tool only detects true duplicates. Given that the items (due to the broke sync) may have been changed on one or more devices the items would not be true duplicates. I would also recommend working from a single device and slowly adding in the others. I'd get all my data into 1Password 8, from all of my sources and then slowly start cleaning it up. This clean up will likely be a manual process based on what you've indicated. My primary goal would be to get the data safe both good and less than good day until you can determine what should be kept.

🔀 Move your existing 1Password data to a 1Password account covers most situations.

    @ag_tommy thanks! I have a couple questions:

    1. Near the top of your linked page it says "IMPORTANT: The password you use to create your 1Password account is the one you will use to unlock 1Password after you migrate your data." I thought your security architecture was built in such a way that 1password never sees my master password. What am I missing here?
    2. Is there a way to go directly from version 6.8.9 to 8, or is it still necessary to go through 7 first? Seems like double the work. Or is it just a quick pass-through?

We do not have access to the password. Nor do we want it. Never share it with us. It's for you and you alone.

    https://1passwordstatic.com/files/security/1password-white-paper.pdf

You'll likely looking for Secure Remote Password page 85. Also, note 1Password.com is not a traditional website. It's a web application and runs entirely within the browser. The password is never transmitted.

You'd need to go to 1Password 7 to help ensure the data is prepared for 1Password 8. I'd recommend getting the data into 1Password 7 and then add your membership and get the data into the membership. (all within 1Password 7).

Then when you're ready you can open 1Password 8, adding the membership. This way you're not bouncing between different versions of the application. If I were in needing to undertake a migration this would be the way I went at it.

@ag_tommy thanks! Working on it now. A few questions:

    1. When I installed 1Password 7 it seems to have deleted my earlier version so I guess there's no going back, right? Not that I plan to, but just curious.
    2. I haven't yet installed 7 anywhere except on my MacBook Pro, so maybe I'm missing something. But when I'm in a record (what's your official term) like Delta Airlines, for example, and click Open and Fill beside the website field it doesn't do anything. What am I doing wrong?
    3. Everything imported quickly and I'm going through and archiving records for sites I no longer use, but just noticed on your original comment from a couple days ago that if I'm understanding correctly the workflow should be to do basic stuff like what I'm doing in 7, then setting up the membership, then doing the heavy lifting in 8, right?
    4. I've tried changing a couple passwords on accounts Watchtower says are compromised, but it seems the changes aren't taking. I'm wondering if it's because Safari is offering a password but I say "choose my own" then generate one in 1Password and pasting that in. Maybe these couple sites don't allow any changes once something's entered?

    1. The data should be present. Typically, installing a new version zips up the older or previous version. This is to prevent trouble with communication between the new version and any browser extensions. Should you need to go back all you would need to do is install the corresponding version and it should pick up any data that is present.
    • I'd also recommend using only one version at a time to prevent things like conflicting locking requirements and so on. Or an inability to unlock in some rare situations. It sounds like you're making good progress.
    1. Login item; It sounds like the browser extension is not installed or possible you do not have a URL set for the item. If you've recently installed the browser extension ensure you completely quit 1Password and the browser and then start them again to align communications. This also helps sort out any communication troubles between the version in use and the browser extension if one happened to be connected to a wrong version.

    2. Watchtower will find true duplicates. It will not find all. The version of the duplicate remover in 1Password 7 was super conservative. We would not auto archive or delete data; you must explicitly tell any tools to perform that sort of task for you.

    3. Ensure you have 1Password for SafarI installed. If you're ready to use 1Password 8 now. I would recommend changing the passwords in 1Password 8 if possible as that will be the experience you'll be using going forward. There would not be a need to familiarize yourself with the previous process.

Thanks @ag_tommy ... sounds good! Just one quick question: on the Mac App Store, there's 1Password for Safari with a small puzzle piece image on the icon. 1Password 7 is there as well, but I assume that's the desktop/laptop version. But in Safari>Settings>Extensions, there's 1Password (7.9.11 from 1Password 7) and also 1Password for Safari. Do I need both of the extensions, and what's the difference? Thanks so much for your patience!

  • @SteveMouzon

You've got good questions. Keep them coming. 1Password for Safari would be for use with 1Password 8. When you uninstall 1Password 7, you'll only have the single extension (1Password for Safari) present. You'll see the version 7 extension disappear from the extension pane in Safari.

Yes, you'll need 1Password for Safari if you're looking to fill in Safari. 🙂

    Notes on 1Password for Safari:

Please open it at least once and follow the directions being sure to allow it access to all sites. We need that permission to perform the following on your behalf.

    • The ability to scan (read) the page HTML to determine if it’s fillable. This also tells us where/when to inject the inline menu.

    • The ability to autofill (write) to the site. While performing an autofill, it effectively changes the HTML. When you submit the autofill, it will allow you to authenticate it properly.

There is no need to add 1Password for Safari to your login items or your Dock. It only needs to be opened once for the initial configuration. From then on it can live silently in your Applications folder.

    Back story.

1Password 7 and earlier had a built in version of the extension for Safari. So no need for a separate download.

1Password 8 uses a web extension which is only distributed by the App Store. To get 1Password 8 to work in Safari you'll need the web extension version.

How's it going? Any other questions? There's no rush or even a need to answer. I was just wrapping up my week (heading into my weekend) and was hoping all was going well for you. See you next week.

Finally rejoining this before my trial runs out. I've now created a family membership, and earlier you said "You'd need to go to 1Password 7 to help ensure the data is prepared for 1Password 8. I'd recommend getting the data into 1Password 7 and then add your membership and get the data into the membership. (all within 1Password 7)." How do I go about getting the data into my membership?

You would either go though the migration process or use the direct move between vaults. If all of your data is in place and you're using the latest version of 1Password 7 (7.9.11), you could let 1Password 8 help you with that. By ensuring you use the latest version of 1Password 7 you'd have already ensured your data is ready. I've outlined both methods below. Nowadays most folks elect to use the lower option.

    1Password 7 only:

Move and copy items from your existing vaults to the new vault(s) in the membership.

Later on you would install 1Password 8.

    1Password 8 in conjunction with 1Password 7:

    • Do not remove 1Password 7 prior to the migration. 1Password 8 will make use of it.

Migrating your data requires 1Password 7.
Upgrading to 1Password 8 will automatically uninstall 1Password 7, so you don’t need to uninstall it manually.

🔀 Move your existing 1Password data to a 1Password account
