Can't turn off prompt from "Apple Passwords"

I have been using 1Password for years and recently added the new Apple Password app to my Mac. That was a mistake as it is nowhere as good as 1Password, but now I can't get the Apple app to go away and it covers up 1Password, even with 1Cloud passwords turned off. Any idea how I can get rid of Apple Passwords, to at least disable it? Thanks.

  • Hi there @ewestland

You can turn this off by following the steps below:

    1. Click the  Apple menu > System Settings...
    2. Choose General > AutoFill & Passwords.
    3. Turn off AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys to disable Apple Passwords autofilling.

Universal Autofill and the 1Password browser extension won't be affected by this change and will continue to work as they did before. :)

Thanks for the fast reply. I have already tried that, but the Apple Password still overlaps with the 1Password.

  • @ewestland In which case, try following the steps below:

Turn off the built-in password manager in your browser # If you’re using Safari

You might also need to turn it off in Safari itself as well as at the system level. Give that a go too and let me know if it helps.

I have been using the latest version of 1Password, Chrome, and the 1Password extension. I went into Safari, and it was turned off. I also had already turned it off in the system settings. Once Apple Password has been added to the Applications folder, I don't think Apple allows it to be deleted. Anyway, I still have the same problem and I'm pretty sure Apple doesn't care, so I really appreciate your help with this.

Thanks for the reply. Just to clarify, are you seeing the following in Safari or Chrome:

    image

    Can you check the following:

    1. Open your browser.
    2. Right-click on the 1Password icon in your browser's toolbar and click Settings.
    3. Make sure that "Make 1Password the default password manager" is turned on.

I look forward to hearing from you.

I'm usually good at this stuff, but I can't seem to find "Make 1Password the default password manager" in Settings.

Thanks for the reply. It looks like you're viewing the Settings page for the desktop app. You'll need to open the settings page for the browser extension instead:

    1. Open your browser.
    2. Right-click on the 1Password icon in your browser's toolbar and click Settings.
    3. Make sure that "Make 1Password the default password manager" is turned on.

Thanks, Dave. I opened up the browser settings and it was already set to default.

    @ewestland

Thanks for confirming that. Can you check to see if you've installed the "iCloud Passwords" extension in Chrome? You can check by accessing this page in Chrome: chrome://extensions/

If you have then remove it: Install and manage extensions - Chrome Web Store Help

If you don't see "iCloud Passwords" installed in Chrome then are you seeing the same "Enable Password AutoFill" menu in Safari?

BINGO! That was it. Thanks so much for the awesome support and fast responses. Asking Apple to help would have been frustrating, if not impossible.

  • I'm happy to help! 😊

I use Safari and 1P for years. None of these suggestions work for me. Any further information? macOS Sequoia 15.1.1 Safari 18.1.1
    Thanks.

I'm sorry that you're running into trouble when using 1Password in Safari. To help me better understand the situation I'd like to ask you to take a screenshot of what you're seeing and attach it to your reply:

Make sure that there isn't anything sensitive visible in your screenshot.

Hi Dave. Unfortunately I'm on the road right now and away from my MacBook. I'll send a screenshot when I get home.
