Secure Notes should have a per-note markdown option

I am affected by the current markdown bug described here & it's annoying - looking forward to a fix soon:

https://1password.community/discussion/148857/secure-notes-missing-line-breaks-and-feature-request-for-turning-off-markdown-in-the-browser

but I want to bring up the longer term problem of markdown being an application preference.

We are technical 1Password users & gain great benefit from storing structured data such as YAML or even JSON in secure notes. We definitely don't want that rendered with markdown as it would be a clownshow

At the same time, we would like to use markdown for human-facing notes needing some formatting

We also provision our employees with secure notes through CLI/API and we can't know whether users have markdown turned on or off

These points above are a strong case for having the markdown flag being associated with each secure note - so you can have some that use markdown and some that do not - rather than an application preference where it's all or nothing

I have talked to support years ago about this concept & it seemed at the time you were enthusiastic about that possibility

Hopefully there is still a future possibility we can mix & match markdown & plain text across our secure notes

  • Hi there @paulpharr

If you're using pre-formatted text, like a different markup, in Secure Notes, you can escape the Markdown formatting by putting three ``` backticks at the top and bottom of the note.

    Here's an example of that:

That way, everything sandwiched in those backticks will be shown verbatim with no Markdown applied, and you can still have Markdown turned on globally for all your notes.

Let me know if that would help in this case. :)

    Thanks for your response Grey.

I was unaware of this triple backtick option and it is helpful as a workaround in some cases.

With the automation we have in place, it would still be nice if there were such a thing as a note that could be guaranteed to be plain text or markdown. I believe the global per-user preference as it's currently implemented to make things less predictable than we'd like account-wide.

I think the ideal for me would be the note's creator chooses "markdown" or "plain text" for the note. The reader could choose "view as plain text" when working with a "markdown" note. I don't think a global pref is necessary, but if it existed, it would be "view all markdown as plain text"

I understand my POV is not universal - but thanks for discussing this!

I'll forward on that feedback to our Product team for their consideration and I'll link them to our conversation here.

That already exists in Settings > General > Format secure notes using Markdown. That's per-app, but global in the sense that it applies to all items, if that's what you mean.

We're here if you need anything. :)
