Clarity about 1Password for Mac: Is it 1 or 7, 8 or even 9?

Is it just me? For crying out loud! All I need to understand is why the 1Password (version: 1Password for Mac 8.10.56 (81056028)) on my MacBook Pro (2019 - 16") claims it's up to date and yet my wife's MacBook Air M1 2020 has 1Password 7 (version 7.9.11)
installed as part of my family account, both using Sequoia!

Why is it so confusing to establish what update is required, how I claim an update if it's required (Apple App Store or direct from 1 Password).

  • Hi @VikingMan, thanks for reaching out!

I can confirm that 1Password 8 is the modern version of 1Password, while 1Password 7 is the previous version and is no longer supported. If you have an active 1Password membership, you can update on any of your devices, as long as they meet the system requirements.

Releases follow the major.minor.patch format, as can be seen with version 8.10.56. You can make sure that you're always up to date by following the steps in our support article here: How to keep 1Password up to date

If your wife is currently on 1Password 7.9.11, I recommend that they upgrade to the latest version of 1Password 8, so that they have access to all the latest features and security updates.

If you have any other questions or require further assistance, let me know, and I'll be happy to help.

That's really helpful and I thank you. Since posting my bad tempered query, (sorry!!) I am beginning to realise that importing the 1Password 7 data into OS Passwords (aka Keychain) for my wife, is not so straightforward or even reliable. I'm torn between the devil and the deep blue sea! She really finds managing both passwords systems impossible, so I'm trying to go for simplicity. My wife will never require access to platforms other than Apple so the cost is another aspect I must consider. Your advice is welcome and gratefully received.

You're most welcome! Are you experiencing any difficulty with exporting your wife's data from 1Password? If so, I'd recommend emailing us at support+forum@1password.com so we can best assist you moving forward. After sending the email, you’ll receive a reply from our friendly support assistant with a Support ID that you can post here. The ID looks something like [#ABC-12345-678].

If the trouble is with importing into Keychain, I'd recommend reaching out to the Apple Support team for further assistance.

I should also mention that if you're currently using a 1Password family account and would prefer to switch to using an individual account, you can find details on how to switch here: Change your 1Password account type

Let me know if you have any questions!
