Upgrade problems, connection problems, almost 50 "Known Issues". Really?

Gotta tell you guys, I'm disappointed. 1Password customer since 2009; 3 Macs, 1 Windows and 3 iOS Devices. I was pleased to see the release of 1Password 4 for Mac in an email today. I purchased the "Family Pack" upgrade, downloaded and installed it on my iMac (OS X 10.8.5).

My first disappointment came with the initial purchase. I was surprised that trying to use 1Password to fill in my credit card and personal information didn't work when I purchased the upgrade...on agilebits very own website! Well...nobody's perfect.

The upgrade/installation process was the next disappointment. It was clunky at best, having to uninstall browser extensions, fiddle with the license, etc. but I managed.

Upgrades used to be much easier.

That said, I now have both 1Password Version 3.8.21 (build 32009) as well as 1 Password Version 4.0.2 (402002) on my iMac! ??? I can't find any instructions indicating that I needed to uninstall version 3 in my confirmation email or on the agilebits website. Perhaps I missed it?

Then, I tried using 1Password 4. Clicking on any of the "Open and Fill" links opens my web browser (Firefox 24.0) and hangs on "Connecting"...the website never loads let alone filling in a username and password. Restarting the app made no difference. Rebooting made no difference. Re-sync with Dropbox made no difference. It just doesn't work.

Opened 1Password 3 and everything is working fine. Now I've no idea if I should either uninstall 1Password 3 to get 1Password 4 to work properly...or if 1Password 4 has so many bugs that I should just uninstall it? I have about 400 logins plus all of the other secure options and do NOT want to lose everything.

FWIW I have no virus applications, etc. and have never had any real problems with upgrading in the past.

Based on the number of "Known Issues" with 1Password 4 - almost 50 (and counting?) - as well as numerous posts on this forum about problems people are having I'd say 1Password 4 for Mac is not ready for prime time. And that's a shame as I've been a 1Password evangelist since day one. I usually wait to upgrade for a bit to avoid these sorts of problems, but agilebits has been fairly stellar about QC historically.

I certainly hope things get ironed out sooner than later...this looks to be a valuable upgrade...one I don't mind paying for. However my advice to others would be to wait.

Any advice as to how others are coping would be appreciated.

TIA!

Quick follow-up, and not a good one. Now "Open and Fill" in 1Password 3 no longer works. I can copy and paste everything as a workaround, but that's a major pain.

Seems both applications are horfed up now. :(

Hate to keep posting to my own thread, but found a workaround for "Open and Fill". Rather than trying it from the 1Password app, open a browser that has the 1PW extension, click on the 1PW button (small key icon in the toolbar), then Logins and pick the site you want to log into from the drop-down menu.

That's still not ideal of course, but it does work (at least for me). Saves having to copy/paste all of the info.

Hope agilebits issues an update soon!

  • Thank you for the feedback, @richsadams!

It seems that you are having problems with the Firefox extension. Out of all browsers, the Firefox extension is still the most challenging one. There are a few known issues there. We hope to resolve them soon.

We designed 1Password 4 so that version 3 could still be used when needed. The only issue there would be with the browser extensions because the new version requires the new extensions.

Thanks very much for the reply. I switched my default browser to Safari and 1PW4 as well as 1PW3 do indeed "open and fill" correctly, thanks.

Hopefully you'll be able to sort out Firefox soon.

Will there be instructions regarding uninstalling 1PW3 when the dust has settled?

    Thanks again!

Okay, just realized (like a lot of other folks here) that 1PW4 has never backed up to Dropbox...although it continually reports that it has...and subsequently is not propagating anything I've added or changed to my other Mac or iOS devices.

Sorry guys, there are WAY to many issues with 1PW4 to deal with any longer. I've wasted a lot of time and I'm uninstalling it and may or may not come back when/if you get everything sorted out. Wish I hadn't purchased the "Family Pack Upgrade" now.

I have to say that I am truly disappointed with AgileBits. I was a 1Password evangelist for years. Upgrades used to be pretty seamless, and the application was an order of magnitude better than anything else...but this is a train wreck.

    Best of luck.

Could you please explain this a little?

    Thank you,

@DavidB, I'm not @roustem (by any means!) but maybe I can help a little.

    1. 1P4 can sync to a folder and thus create a keychain which can be read by 1P3 (which is very useful in certain circumstances: for example, for those of us wishing to synchronise directly to 1P4 on iOS, via iTunes and without using Dropbox).
    2. Just in case you weren't already aware the latest 1P4 extension for Firefox (4.0.1.b1) has, at least for me, resolved the "open and fill" issue in Firefox when using the 1P4 main app.

  • Hi @richsadams,

I'm sorry to hear it's been a train wreak for you. As Stephen mentioned in his post above, we've fixed the Go and Fill issue in the latest extension update.

Note that we do offer 30-day money back promise, that applies to the upgrades as well. If you'd like to get a refund, please email us at support+forum@agilebits.com and we'll accommodate you. In addition, we do want to help you fix the rest of your issues if you'd like us to. The Dropbox issues that many folks here have reported are due to unexpected sandboxing restrictions in the Mac App Store. Sadly, Apple does not allow beta testing through the Mac App Store, which is why we're missing some of these bugs as we have to wait until it is submitted before we can fix it.

However, since you mentioned you got it from our website, there hasn't been many reports of Dropbox sync issues with the website version. If you can let us figure it out, we can get it fixed as fast as we can.
