Max. width of the sidebar

Howdy,

I've switched from 1Password 3 to 4 and am pretty glad so far but still have one very important issue: I'm organizing a couple thousand of server/service data in directories, subdirectories etc so the names in the sidebar become long. But the max width of the sidebar seems to be limited? I can just resize the sidebar's width in a pretty small range. Bug/feature?

Cheerio,
Chris

Howdy, Chris. Thanks for reporting this issue.

Especially with nested folders expanded it's totally understandable how having the limited sidebar width can be an issue. I've filed a request to allow sidebar resizing to be less constrained, preferably (when feasible) to fit the widest row without truncation. With a full-sized window, when the middle item list pane is narrow there can be plenty of width to be taken from the details pane for giving to the sidebar. :)

1Password 4 becomes actually more and more unusable to me due to the fixed maximum width of the sidebar. Is there any change in sight? I also cannot find any 1Password 3 download link anymore to downgrade :(

    Hey, Chris.

Right now I don't know how soon this change might happen. I've mentioned your issue to the team and am awaiting additional information that might be helpful for you.

1Password 3 can be downloaded from here:

    Legacy Versions of 1Password

If you would prefer to use 1Password 3 I'd be happy to help you with the migration process from 1Password 4. Summarizing it:

    • Create 1P3-compatible keychains of every 1P4 vault you want to keep, e.g. using Dropbox or Folder sync
    • Disable Always keep 1Password mini running under 1P4 > Preferences… > General
    • Uninstall all 1P4 browser extensions
    • Install/configure 1P3 and any browser extensions you want to use

Of course we do hope you'll stick with 1Password 4. :)

Any improvements in sight? I actually upgraded to 4.1.3 right now but this stupid bug/feature limiting the max. width of the left bar is still there :(

Nothing new to report about this yet, Chris. I'll mention it directly to one of the developers next time we're chatting.

Hi Chris. I wanted to let you know that we are intending to increase the sidebar width limit, maybe just a bit to start with still looking for unintended side effects.

Hey sjk, any news? I actually switched to an own HTML based app for structuring credentials. The problem is: I have more then 1k accounts to manage in 3-5 embedded folders (External infrastructure -> Rackspace -> DB cluster -> credentials) and for now it's not manageable for me to do this in 1Password which is pretty frustrating ...

    Hey Chris ( @Christoph Pilka‌ ),

    Yup, some news. :)

This change was made In 1Password 4.2.BETA-2:

    • Increased the sidebar's maximum width.

And it may be increased more in another update, as my previous reply implied.

Since the beta version shares the same data files with the website version (4.1.3 being the current latest) it's an easy switch if you'd like to give it a try:

    Joining the 1Password Beta Family

Any issues specific to the 1Password 4 beta application and/or its extensions can be reported in the Mac Beta subforum.

    Glad to see you back again, Chris ( @Christoph Pilka‌ ). :)

If the sidebar is still too narrow at its maximum width please let us know what width would work for you and we'll see if it can be increased.

Hi, I also suffer from a far too narrow width for the 1Password sidebar. I would like it to be at least twice the current size. I am using 1Password 4.4.1. I cannot find any way to change the maximum width. Am I missing something?

    Hi @edgar,

You're not missing anything… except the ability to resize the sidebar any wider than it'll currently go. :)

We'll see what we can do about making that resizing less constrained. Thanks for the suggestion!

Hm, I opened this discussion more than 15 months ago and still have the issue with the sidebar width. First of all: why do you not just allow to let the user decide the width of this sidebar dynamically? All users have different requirements, in my situation its something like 800 pixel that would help.

    Hi @Christoph Pilka,

Is the problem that you can't resize the width of the sidebar at all, or that you can resize it but want to increase the maximum width? The ability to change the width was first added to a beta version about a year ago, and that's working fine for me in the latest version (currently 5.1). If you can change the width but can't make it as wide as you want, we can submit a request to our developers. But if you can't change the width at all, we should be able to help you with that (please let us know the exact version you're using). Thanks! :)

    Hi @Drew_AG, hi @sjk,

so, actually I am sitting right now in front of a 3440x1440 display and am really frustrated that the left column is expandable to max. couple hundred pixels. My naming schema is like 'IPv4_address_of_the_host | hostname | Service' which almost ends up in long directory labels plus a hierarchical structure which indents the childs and leaves less place. I brought this topic almost 2 years ago to this forum and I'm really missing a solid solution to solve this issue.

And this is not the only thread about it: https://discussions.agilebits.com/discussion/32539/maximum-column-width-of-1password-items Please guys, fix this simple UI issue and let the user decide how he organizes his app!

    Hello again, Chris!

I've asked our developers to take another look at this issue with the sidebar column width, currently maxed at 400pt, that's still too constrained for you on wider displays. Your previous reply mentions:

…, in my situation its something like 800 pixel that would help.

Would you be satisfied with that as the maximum width if it still has to have a fixed limit?

@sjk 800px is better than 400px but I don't see any reason not to let the user to decide if he wants 5% or 95% of his screen to give to the sidebar. so the basic question is: why are you shifting pixels forth and back and not percentages? but yeah, 800px is definitely ways better than the narrow stripe now ...

Thanks Chris! I'm not a developer myself so I don't know exactly why that is the case, but I do know our developers nearly always have a reason for doing things the way they do. That's not to say it can't be changed though, and I'll add your feedback about that to our internal tracker. I can certainly see how it would be helpful to have more flexibility with the width of the sidebar.

@Christoph Pilka: I don't have any news for you, I'm afraid. 400x seems to be more than sufficient for most people, but of course you're looking for more for your specific case. This will be something we'll be looking at as we design future versions of 1Password though. Thanks for letting us know you'd prefer more sizing flexibility!
