Lost in a moment!

I have been using 1Password for a long while. Kinda liked 1Password 3 - simple, met my needs (private user) My passwords are a mess but I felt that 1P3 provided a good degree of protection by encryption and allowed a sync with other devices. I use all the wrong methods for producing passwords - self generated easy to remember, etc. Along comes 1P4. I decide it's time to take steps to really protect my information. I upgrade my iMac, iPad, iPhone - gonna' get serious about password protection!

Now, I am "lost in the moment" to quote a cool song title! I cannot figure out what the heck is going on! The Agilebits 1Password for Mac web page is cool, nice graphics but short on real information. Pretty much a sales pitch right?

Now there are Logins, Passwords (WTH!) some passwords are in Secure Notes. Why and what are these things? I have 700 All Items, 301 Duplicates, 129 Passwords (seem to be duplicates) Search produces endless possibilities - try searching for an Earthlink webmail password - it finds all usernames that are Earthlink!

OK, I decide to make a real effort to understand 1P4, and I read the Tutorials - those I can find are not pertinent. I read dozens of FAQ's to no avail. Is there a User Guide anywhere or a "work flow" explanation? It seems that all the dialog is between "sys admins" and other pro's. I bet many of your customers are medium/low experience users like me. I know you're all busy - new and improved product! Judging by the number of FAQ's there is a lot of confusion. Maybe it would be easier for you to put together a good User Guide?

I am lost people, and it's a shame!! Your software is not cheap and has a good reputation. Is it deserved?

    Hi @idgoddard,

First of all, I would like to sincerely apologize for the delay in responding to you here but we have been a bit overwhelmed since the launch of 1Password 4 for Mac. We're all working hard and putting in extra hours to get back to our usual snappy responses and we really appreciate your patience.

Now, let's see if we can't get you sorted out here! The 1Password for Mac page is more geared to showing off the awesome features of 1Password, but you should find our User Guide and Knowledgebase should be more useful to you.

Now there are Logins, Passwords (WTH!) some passwords are in Secure Notes. Why and what are these things?

I'm sorry for the confusion here - you're not the only one who is surprised by the 'Passwords' category. This category holds all of the passwords that have been generated by 1Password, essentially the same category as 'Generated Passwords' in 1Password 3. I'm not sure why some of your passwords ended up in Secure Notes though - how did you import your data from 1Password 3?

I have 700 All Items, 301 Duplicates, 129 Passwords (seem to be duplicates)

Our Security Audit feature can be really handy in getting rid of some of these duplicates. The first (and simplest) thing to do is go to Help > Tools > Remove Redundantly Generated Passwords. This will get remove any passwords 1Password has generated that have also been converted into Logins. From there, you can look through the Duplicate Passwords option in Security Audit. This is handy for showing you which accounts have the same password, but it also can show you any passwords (with the combination lock icon) are the same as a Login. Any passwords that haven't been caught by the original sweep can be manually removed from here if they have a matching Login entry.

Our documentation team has been working hard to get our support articles updated for 1Password 4, but there are still some missing areas, to be sure. I hope this helps to get you a little bit less lost, but please let me know what other areas of 1Password are baffling, and I'd be happy to help sort it out.

I am also confused and am keen to know if in the 'edit' mode it is possible to change the category that something was originally assigned to. I recently upgraded to 1P4, after having an earlier version - and would like to re-organise my various logins, email accounts etc into their appropriate categories (which they are not at present).
Help required - though I suspect it is simply not possible - which is a failing of the system I think!

    Hi @polarbear2013,

I'm sorry to hear that you're confused by 1Password right now. Unfortunately you're not missing anything. Right now it is not possible to change an item's category. Our developers are looking at a way to make this possible in the future, but because each category has been designed with specific default fields, some of which need to be able to fill automatically in web forms, it's not a simple task.

To organize your 1Password database right now, you will need to copy and paste the information into a new entry. Try using the anchor tool in 1Password Mini to make this process a lot easier: select the item you wish to move in 1Password Mini, then click the anchor icon in the lower left corner to create a moveable pop-up window that will stay on screen.

I hope this helps, I do apologize that we don't have a perfect solution for you just yet!

Thanks for your help.... It will be a far better system if this becomes possible. I bought an earlier version in 2011 which I thought was excellent, but had to re-purchase 1P4 because the system suddenly started asking me for license information which I couldn't find any record of - and I got not response from 'support' when I sought their help. Now I have to go through and recreate a few hundred entries as well.... Oh dear.

    Hi @polarbear2013,

I'm so sorry to hear that you had trouble getting through to support. We have been busier than usual lately with the launch of 1Password 4, but our entire team is putting in extra hours to get back to our usual snappy responses.

I hope that your organization process isn't too tedious, I've added a vote to our changing between categories feature request just for you :)
