No DropBox sync option under Sync in 1PW 4.1

I have read the instructions for syncing with iCloud and DropBox. Both tell you to choose from the dropdown menu under Sync in 1Password. I have version 4.1 and I don't see any such dropdown box. If I go to Preferences/Sync I see "Syncing with Folder". Under that is an option to change syncing, but when I choose that all it offers is to disable syncing with the folder, which doesn't seem to be a great idea. Any suggestions? I need to move my data to a new computer. Alternately, if I can copy a file from the current keychain and use it to set up the new computer, tell me that .

You could certainly use folder sync to create a keychain which you could then copy to the new computer. AgileBits always recommend you use only one sync method at any one time, which is why you see the prompt about ceasing to sync with the folder when you go to change the sync method.

    Hi @johnmaskins,

I would like to apologize for the delay in responding to you here but we have been a bit overwhelmed since the launch of 1Password 4 for Mac. We're all working hard and putting in extra hours to get back to our usual snappy responses and we really appreciate your patience.

If you are simply looking to transfer your data over to a new computer, the copy of your datafile from the synced folder would work just fine. Simply go to the folder that 1Password is syncing to, and copy the 1Password.agilekeychain file there.

If you want to sync your data with the new computer, changing syncing to Dropbox or iCloud will make this easy. Don't worry about disabling syncing: in 1Password 4, your data is always stored locally in addition to whichever sync solution you select, so there is no danger of losing data when you disable or change syncing.

I hope this helps, but if you have any further questions, we're here for you :)

I am in the same boat as @johnmaskins. I don't think you are fully understanding the situation. In both of our cases neither iCloud or DropBox are presented as synching options in the 1P4 preferences. I know I have both iCloud and DropBox fully operational. Why isn't 1P4 seeing them? Do we have to turn off folder synching before 1P4 will display the other sync options?

  • Hi @jstrickland69,

You can only use one syncing method at a time, therefore you must disable folder sync before you'll be able to choose iCloud or Dropbox.

Just to make clear. iCloud and Dropbox syncing won't even show up as options until folder syncing is disabled. Correct?

  • That's right, @jstrickland69.

Sync preferences with folder sync enabled:

After choosing Change Syncing..., you'll see this and be able to use Dropbox:

Dropbox option requires you pick your local agilekeychain and the location of that file is shown nowhere in the UI unless you sync to a folder (and then when you stop the Sync, it quits updating that keychain).

    Hi, @peterpanm.

After choosing a keychain (vault) to sync with Dropbox you'll see its location on the Sync configuration sheet, e.g.:

Yup, it stops being updated after using Change Syncing… to disable syncing with it. :)

@oversoul, yea i've seen that screenshot before. your documentation implies it 'just works' but there is no location specified for the agilekeychain before clicking 'dropbox sync' and when i click 'dropbox sync' it asks where the agilekeychain is stored so we end with a chicken and egg problem.

    Thanks for the reply, @peterpanm.

An Agile Keychain used with Dropbox syncing has to be chosen/selected before its location can be displayed. Users can have multiple keychains in different Dropbox locations, each one possibly being synced with a different 1P4 vault.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding which keychain location in Dropbox you'd like 1P4 to display when? :)

One issue, which @jstrickland69 questioned in post #6, is that the Preferences > Sync tab doesn't display alternate choices for syncing while another is currently enabled. For example, with Folder syncing active (like in the first image of @Jasper's post #7) you don't see choices for iCloud and Dropbox.

Hi peterpanm. I have a similar problem (new install of 1P4 on Apple MAC). In Preferences/Sync, I can see iCloud, Dropbox and Folder but Sync works only with iCloud. Dropbox and Folder both say "Click here to select a 1Password vault in Dropbox/Folder" but the button "choose vault..." opens a list of folders with no clue as to what to select. Help.

    Hi @abeedie,

I apologize for the confusion here. When you are setting up Dropbox or Folder sync, the 'choose vault' button is giving you the option to select where your vault will be synced to.

I hope this helps you get things synced up, but if you have any further questions, we're here to help!

Hi - as I mentioned above, when I select "choose vault" I am confronted with a list of folders: User Information, Applications, Library, System, Users, etc etc. Most of these will have numerous sub-folders. I am not confronted with something saying it is the vault. Where is the vault in all these folders and how do I identify it?

    Hi @abeedie,

Where is the vault in all these folders and how do I identify it?

Have you ever used Dropbox syncing with 1Password on any system or device? If not, there's no vault (keychain) to identify and the first step will be to create a new keychain in your Dropbox folder when configuring Dropbox syncing with 1Password 4 on your Mac. I'll use "vault" and "keychain" similar to how they're defined in the 1Password 4 glossary

If your Mac username is abeedie, and you're syncing your primary vault, just choose /Users/abeedie/Dropbox as the folder to create the new keychain in. Similar to the image in post #9, but instead of /Users/agilebits/Dropbox/1Password/1Password.agilekeychain, you'll see this full location:

    /Users/abeedie/Dropbox/1Password/1Password.agilekeychain

Click Continue there, then Start Syncing to confirm:

A copy of your 1P4 primary vault will be copied to that new keychain in Dropbox. The 1Password folder in the Dropbox folder will be created automatically (if it doesn't exist) and the keychain will be automatically named 1Password.agilekeychain.

Syncing between the vault (in your 1P4 database) and keychain (in Dropbox) is now enabled and the Sync tab of the Preferences window now looks similar to this:

You can also refer to this guide for instructions:

    Sync with Dropbox

I hope that helps get Dropbox syncing up and running with 1Password 4 on your Mac. Let us know how it goes. :)

Thank you very much. With this additional guidance I have synced both Mac and IPAD with Dropbox successfully. I think I was misled by the button "choose vault". It might be better if it said something like "choose vault location" and gave some guidance such as yours above. Once again, many thanks.

You're very welcome, @abeedie. It's great to hear you've got syncing successfully configured and working with 1P4 on your Mac and iPad!

The choose … button text has been changed in the 4.2 beta:

I'll mention to the developers that changing the Click here to select a 1Password vault in Dropbox text to something like Click here to create or select a 1Password vault in Dropbox would help clarify that both of those choices are available.
