Received gift, but computer is too old [resolved; emailed 1Password 3 license]

I received a gift license to 1Password 4, but I only have Lion 10.7.5, so I downloaded 3.8 instead. Then, when I tried to open my license, it came up as a text file, and when I tried to enter the license manually, trying to guess what line the key was, it didn't work. It looks like there's a totally different code for this older version. What do I need to do?
