Not being prompted to save login from IE to 1Password

I just installed 1Password - everything seemed to go OK - configuration seems to be correct - it's running but nothing happens when i go to a login of any sort - it's supposed to automatically pop up but nothing happens.

The Preferences > Browsers show a check box for IE - I'm running IE version 11

If I go to IE Tools and select 1Password, I can manually save the login. But then the next time I'm back to that login, nothing prompts to fill and proceed.

Am i missing something? This can't be that clunky. Clearly I'm missing a critical step in getting myself successfully started.

OK ... I take part of that back. Even the manual adds didn't work. It adds the URL but not the username or password.
I need some serious help before I get started.

I'm sorry you're having trouble getting started, @snhughes11‌! Let's start work on figuring out what's wrong.

Can you tell me the full URL of a couple of sites where 1Password isn't offering to save a new Login item for you, and a couple where manually saving a Login isn't working, either?

I originally tried to manually save both Facebook and Verizon that I couldn't use to log in after set up, either. That is where I stopped trying with manual set up.

When searching the forum for other issues similar, I saw how to get the 1Password icon to the toolbar - which didn't work either because there wasn't an option to add it (home icon dropdown doesn't have a customize option). I'm thinking something in IE is blocking this somehow? (note - pop ups are currently blocked - is that a problem?)

In the IE tool icon drop down 1Password is listed. If I choose it, it asks if I will accept (and I do a small 1Password window shows up with "Auto-Save Logins" and "Auto-Submit Logins" are both checked)

I just found this thread labeled "Pop Up" ... if I do these steps on facebook -- enter user name and password but not submit form, open 1Password "Save Login" it seems to save. BUT ... then when I go to log back in nothing auto fills. I have to go back into 1Password mini window through IE Tools drop down and select "Login into Facebook" to make it all happen. This can't be the way it is supposed to be, right?
I haven't tested this on more sites - just facebook for now/

Also - Is there a way to go to a site to log in from the main application vs. the IE mini window thing?

Just addressing the issue of having to go through the Tools menu (as I haven't had a chance to look into those sites, yet):

Are you saying you've tried the steps in the "Where is the 1Password button in my browser?" article in the "FAQ" section of the user's guide?

I ask because there's no need to click on the Home button—just on the browser's toolbar (to make sure the Command Bar option is enabled) and then again so you can choose Customize > Add or remove commands and proceed with the steps that follow.

Filled in fake credentials, submitted the login form, accepted 1Password's immediate offer to create a new Login item; refreshed the page, pressed Ctrl+\, and 1Password filled the form with the saved credentials.

Filled in fake credentials, and submitted the login form, but 1Password failed to offer to save a Login item. Created a Login item in the main 1Password program. Visited the page again, held the pointer over the Sign-in link (what an awkward mechanism they've designed!), and pressed Ctrl+\, but 1Password reported "Internet Explorer is denying access to a <frame> because it is on another domain."

The developer of the site's login page decided to load content for the login form on that page from a different domain (for whatever reason), but Internet Explorer considers that a potential security risk and denies 1Password the ability to fill in the fields on that "cross-domain" form. I'm sorry we don't have a way around Microsoft's judgment on this issue.

You can still copy your username and password from 1Password into the form. (I wasn't able to get the Auto-Type feature in 1Password for Windows to fill it.)

Because the Login item was saved for only the password page, I edited it in the main 1Password program, changing the value in the Location field from the very specific:

...to the more general:

Then I revisited the original URL (http://www.pepco.com/home/), and pressed Ctrl+\, and 1Password filled the form with the saved username; clicked the > button; on the next page, pressed Ctrl+\, and 1Password filled the form with the saved password; clicked the Continue button.

Summary:

The Pepco site, being a two-page login process, presents a bit of a challenge, but there's the solution.

The cross-domain frame on the Verizon site presents the only real insurmountable obstacle (though your credentials can still be copied and pasted, so you can still use 1Password to create a strong, unique password that you don't have to remember).

The Facebook and Google sites worked as expected—I wasn't able to reproduce any problem on them, at all.

Suggestion:

I'm on Windows 8 (not 7) - is this part of the problem or challenge?

So I see that the problem lies there. How do I get past this to start saving passwords (auto prompt) and using passwords (Ctrl + ) to make this whole experience actually work?
I can go through and try to manually type all passwords (or for more complicated sites - your 2 step process, etc) but I want to get past these initial problems first.

I have read “Introduction,” “Getting Started,” and “Tutorials” sections of the user’s guide, accessible from the Help menu and in the Support area of our web site. Also - I purchased a book when I purchased the Family license. None of this has helped at all.

I have a Windows 7 laptop that I can try all of this on (was going to be step 2 for me ... Step 1 was setting up on my primary Windows 8 desktop and then setting up to sync with secondary use laptop). It has to work for Windows 8 desktop or it won't be a feasible option.

Question - how do I get that book I purchased to download to a kindle? I downloaded and viewed the PDF easily. There weren't instructions on where to save the kindle version as usually everything just feeds to my Kindle, but not this book. I'm growing weary.

I can't understand why you can't see a Customize command on that second menu—it's standard IE behavior. I think you may be clicking on the wrong place, the second time, and I hope this video will help: http://www.screencast.com/t/AVNvcTgtqn

1Password works in both Windows 7 and Windows 8.

It has to work for Windows 8 desktop or it won't be a feasible option.

We'll figure out what's going on and get things working for you.

I had to go away for awhile as I quickly tired of trying to make this work - but I'm back at it again.

My statement was - Ctrl + \ does not bring up 1Password.-- you asked What program has focus when you press Ctrl+\?
Answer = IE

I have yet to be able to get 1Password to auto save (or auto prompt to fill in) a single login on my Windows 8 computer.
I installed this on my Windows 7 laptop - works fairly well for the 5 or so I've tried (except for the tricky logins that I've posted about separately).
I hooked everything up to DropBox so now I see my correct dbase on my Windows 8 computer from those added on my Windows 7 laptop.

Can you teach me how to manually add the logins that I would like to on my Windows 8 computer since I seem to not be able to get this to work?
I am now able to pull up 1Password now using the small icon on IE bar ... but I must not be manually adding the login correctly.

For example just to log into this forum - I hit the icon to open the small 1Password window. Then I go back to the log in screen I want to save and type in the user name & password. Go back tot he 1Password window and hit "Save Login". Is that all I need to do? And then to use it from the same window (because nothing pops up to log me in) I choose "Go and Fill Login" and select the one I want?
I tried this on Garmin.com - but it wouldn't save my user name and password (but seems to save the path). After I post this I will test the one I added for logging into this forum.

Thanks, Yes. I have read those items and they seem to work about 1/2 of the time. So the other times it doesn't work it must be the way that sites set up their log in screens or something. For example, garmin.com I used the 1Password icon to save but it only saves the (not the user name or password).

I'm guessing I'll never get 1Password to auto-fill or auto-save or prompt me automatically on my Windows 8 desktop which is a shame since that is my primary computer. This is the machine I need it to be the easiest - and I can't seem to get there.

When I hit the 1Password icon - it doesn't seem like it is a trusted source because Windows asks me to allow it before it will open. Could this be part of the Ctrl + \ problem and why it won't auto save or prompt?

@snhughes11‌ You're having these problems with IE, correct? If possible, can you try 1Password in Chrome or Firefox or Safari? I would like to isolate this problem to IE (and rule out this as a bigger problem). Assuming this problem is IE-only, we can zoom in on your IE installation (and its settings). Thanks!

I installed Chrome and then installed the related extensions ... Ctrl + \ now opens 1Password. So clearly something is blocking IE i just don't know what ... any ideas?
