When does a sync happen on the desktop client? I don't see a way to manually sync it like the ios versions have.

If you are using Dropbox, syncing happens almost immediately after any change to the database. In this case, there are spinning icons in your Dropbox folder that show when syncing is happening and green checkmark icons when syncing is complete. You can also see this happening with the icon in the menu bar, in color if you've chosen that Dropbox option. If you are using iCloud, it's a little more mysterious what the timing is, but in any event it is controlled by Apple, not 1Password. It happens often, and in my experience at least, it never takes more that a a small number of minutes between making changes on the Mac and being able to see them on my iOS devices. But there is no visible sing that it's happening.
