My question of the day is this

If someone can get their hands on my 1Password.agilekeychain folder and my BackUp folder, are they still safe?

I was wondering the difference between 1Password.agilekeychain folder and my backup file.

since I can restore my data from both of them, aren't they practically the same thing?

(I only use local sync by the way)

The backups are simply copies of the agilekeychain. You can restore a backup by using the Restore option in the Backup menu, or you could simply create a new .agilekeychain folder and extract the backup zip's contents into the new folder.

Since they are just copies of the keychain, all of the encryption is still in place and so the backups are just as secure as the keychain itself.

If someone gets hold of your keychain (or the backups) then they'd still have to break the encryption. So long as you use a decent master password then this is going to take a lot of time. It's not impossible but it is statistically highly unlikely.

If you're interested in the security principles behind it then have browse through Agilebit's blog history: http://blog.agilebits.com/
There's some really good stuff in there.

    Hi @dwk,

Richard is accurate about the backups and 1Password.agilekeychain. The backups are just compressed versions of your data files and it is encrypted.

This blog post might be a good starting place: http://blog.agilebits.com/2012/03/30/the-abcs-of-xry-not-so-simple-passcodes/ It focuses on the iPhone but the principle is the same for any 1Password apps.
