Two (not one) browser windows open when I click on a URL on 1Password for Mac
I have 1Password for Mac (version 4.4.1 from Mac App store) loaded on my iMac. When I double click on a URL for a vendor whose user name and password I have stored in 1Password, 1Password then opens two instances of my default browser. One instance is a default search engine (I have it set to Google), and the second instance is the particular vendor that I want, selected from 1Password.
How can I configure 1Password NOT to open the duplicate browser window with the default search engine? I would just like 1Password to open one browser window, with the particular vendor I want.

Hi @GaryRG,
…, 1Password then opens two instances of my default browser. One instance is a default search engine (I have it set to Google), and the second instance is the particular vendor that I want, selected from 1Password.
Are those separate windows that open or two tabs within the same window?
Two tabs opening within a window is common behavior when there are no Chrome windows open and you:
- Double-click a Login item in the item list, or select Fill Login in Browser in its context menu, from the main 1Password application
- Select
open and fill
in item details from the main application or mini window
How can I configure 1Password NOT to open the duplicate browser window with the default search engine?
If two different browser windows are opening when you're opening a 1Password item there should be a way to fix that. Please let us know if that's what's happening, or if it's just two tabs in the same window. Thanks!

Two different browser windows open. Not two tabs in the same window. And, thanks for helping me fix this. It happens with Safari, Firefox, and Chrome too.

Thanks for that info, @GaryRG.
It happens with Safari, Firefox, and Chrome too.
Are you making it happen with each of those browsers by first switching the default to one of them, then clicking the URL of a Login item in the main 1Password application to Go & Fill with? And does this only happen when the browser isn't already running?
Instead of clicking a Login item in the main application, can you try selecting one from 1Password Mini and let us know if that changes web browser behaviour?
Thanks ahead for the answers!

Yes, you are right, I have tested each of the three browsers. I set one of them to be the default, and then double click on the URL of the item I have entered in 1Password's Login category. I get two instances, two windows, regardless of whether the browser is already open or not.
Your other suggestion worked. I get only one window if I open up the browser from 1Password Mini.
And, thanks for helping me out here. How do I configure 1Password to give me only one window when opening a login URL from the main program?

Hi @GaryRG,
Thanks for the followup.
… , and then double click on the URL of the item I have entered in 1Password's Login category
Here's another thought. Instead of double-clicking the URL, can you try a single-clicking it? Or, double-click the item name in the items list. For example:
Hopefully that will keep two windows from opening. :)

SJK,
Thanks for your response. But, on two of the three browsers, no joy. On my iMac, using 1Password (Version 4.4.1 (441006)
Mac App Store), When I used 1Password with Chrome (Version 37.0.2062.122) and Firefox (version) 32.0.2, 1Password still opened up two instances, with either a double click on the left, or a single click on the right. When I used Safari as my default browser (version Version 7.0.6 (9537.78.2), 1Password did open up only one instance, both with a a double click on the left, or a single click on the right. That is a win. Will all this go away when 1Password 5 is launched, so maybe we are beating a dead horse?
I appreciate your time, Gary

Hi @GaryRG,
It's still puzzling to me how this is happening, especially with Chrome. Do you have any extensions installed in Chrome and/or Firefox that could be changing how 1Password is using tabs/windows?
I'm curious - is there a reason you prefer using the main 1Password application instead of 1Password mini to select items?

I do not prefer the 1Password App over the 1Password mini. Just more used to using the App. Can't teach an old dog new tricks. I suppose if the App does not work correctly, and the mini does, I should use what works. Problem solved. Use mini.
You asked if I had any extensions installed. I do. For Chrome, I have "1Password: Password Manager and Secure Wallet 4.2.4.90" installed and enabled. I allow it incognito, too, but admit that I do not know what that does. I also have AdBlock Plus, Ghostery and WOT extensions installed and enabled. For Firefox, I have the same 3 extensions, plus version 4.2.4 of 1Password.
Will version 5 solve this issue?
Thanks, Gary

I would be surprised if 1Password 5 changed anything in this regard for you. This certainly is a strange issue, though.
Does it make any difference if you disable the other browser extensions? I use AdBlock myself (and have used the other extensions in the past), so I don't suspect those are the culprits, but I'd love to rule them out.
If you're willing to post (either here on the forum or via email [support@ agilebits .com]) a video of what you are seeing, I'm curious if it would give us any clues.
I normally use Jing myself since not only does it record the video, but they'll host it as well:

Wondered if there was ever a resolution to this? I am having exactly the same issue. I believe it was a known issue that would be fixed in an update, but the issue still seems to exist.

Could you give us a bit more detail on your 1Password ecosystem? I'd love to know the version numbers of both 1Password and your operating system, and your browser of choice for good measure. :)
From the thread above, it appears that we were still trying to track down the issue - we haven't been able to recreate it on our end. If you could provide us with a few more details about the steps that you're taking that lead to this, it would be much appreciated.

Using version 1Password 5.0.2 on a Mac. Happens on both a MacBook Pro and Mac desktop. Running Yosemite on the Macs. If a Firefox browser is open, it will open a new tab. If no Firefox browser is open, it will open two browsers. The first browser will default to my home page, and the second browser will open the link from 1Password, and function correctly. On Safari it will open two tabs if no browser is open. The first tab will be the home page, and the second tab will be the 1Password-linked page.

If you bring up 1Password mini (default keyboard shortcut
⌥⌘\
), click on the cog and look in Open URLs in... (bottom option) is it set to Current Tab, New Tab or New Window? (image below for reference)If I set that to New Window (which isn't the default) and double click on a URL in a Login item I can get it to create two windows. URLs do behave differently though, they were always intended to be launch with a single click rather than a double click like you would use to open a document on your Mac. Not to say there isn't oddness going on...

Thanks for responding littlebobbytales. It is set to "Current Tab" and I have tried both single and double-click, and get the same result. I have changed these settings, and still get the same result. It works perfectly when a browser is already open. It is only an issue when no browser is open. Very strange. Not a show-stopper, just irritating.

Hi guys,
@stephenengland, I can understand it being very irritating.
I can confirm this is a still known bug in Firefox but we have no resolution at the moment, it's an open bug report in our tracker right now (OPX-255).
I can reproduce this issue on my Mac, so hopefully, we'll have a fix sooner. I'll be sure to nudge our team to see if we can do something.

I can confirm it as well. 1Password is great but this "hickup" is certainly annoying. Sure would like a fix.

1Password is a great product. Was this ever resolved? It is very annoying after a while.
Thanks

Using OS X Yosemite and Firefox I have been having the same multiple window issue. Very irritating. The best fix I have found so far is to OPEN Firefox FIRST. I can then click on my logins within the main 1 Password 5 app (not 1 Password mini) and it will open a new tab with the relevant website rather than multiple windows. If I click on 1 Password logins WITHOUT having my Firefox already OPEN I get two Firefox windows (one with my regular default page and the other with the site I am logging into). I am happy that I can avoid this just by simply opening to my default Firefox page before using 1 Password.

Hi @Tim_C,
Thanks for taking the time to let us know! I'm glad it works well for you when you open a window in Firefox first. I'm sorry the "multiple window" issue is still happening if you open a Login item before Firefox is open. Luckily the workaround is easy, and hopefully our developers will be able to squash the bug in a future version.
If you need anything else, just let us know! :)

This appears NOT to be a 1Password problem/bug.
I get this same "two Firefox windows open" when I open a URL in pretty much any external program, for example: 1Password, Mac Mail, even the Terminal command line typing 'open /Applications/Firefox.app "http://google.com"'
It appears to be a bug in the Firefox extension Adblock Plus 2.6.10 and 2.6.11, since about August 1. If I disable that extension, the problem goes away.
See the trouble ticket: https://issues.adblockplus.org/ticket/2850
and a forum thread: https://adblockplus.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=39748Hope this helps someone.__
[Oops, just realized the OP was not this past September, but a year ago! Perhaps this info will still help someone...]

@Brian_Holmes: Oh wow. In your defense, the most recent posts were just last month, and this information will certainly be invaluable to anyone else encountering this issue. Thanks for sharing that! :chuffed:
