1Password and bookmarks: do I need to keep bookmarked URLs if the details are in 1Password?

I have my bank account in my vault; do I delete my bank account from my desktop?

    Hi @Jim Philpot,

I'm not quite sure what you're asking here, could you provide a bit more detail? If you have your bank account details stored in 1Password, you do not need to keep a copy of them saved elsewhere on your computer.

    I apologize if I'm misunderstanding!

Thanks, your response was helpful. However, I have this and all other applications in the application folder. Do I remove those in 1Password from the application folder?

    @Jim Philpot
Which "applications" are you talking about?
What and where is the "application folder"?
    1Password does not store applications.

    Hi @Jim Philpot

I think I understand! You've stored your Software Licenses in 1Password? 1Password can store important details such as your license numbers and version information, but it does not store the actual applications. Please don't delete anything from the Applications folder on your computer. :)

I did not explain my question well enough. On Safari I have bookmarks for all of my important applications. Many are now in 1Password available to me with my password. However the bookmarked applications still exist outside 1Password with a variety of passwords. Should I no longer keep those bookmarks? Jim Philpot

    Hi @Jim Philpot

Ok, I'm still getting my wires crossed somewhere. Safari bookmarks are only for websites, not applications. Maybe it would help me to see a screenshot of what you're seeing. There are instructions on how to take a screenshot here: http://take-a-screenshot.org/. Simply click the document button in the top of the comment field, and select the file you wish to share:

I have placed most of my important sites into my vault, however, they still are Bookmarked in Safari. I can open them from the bookmark and from my vault. Those in the bookmarked list are not protected. What do I need to do?

    Jim Philpot

  • Hi Jim,

A bookmark simply opens the webpage, it does not contain your login information. After visiting the bookmarked page, you still need to login using 1Password.

Please let us know if you have any other questions. We're always happy to help!

When I open the bookmarked page I can enter my user name and password and access the bank account. In other instances when I open a bookmarked page I immediately see 1Password. In that instance the application is protected, but the first example does not seem to be protected.

I think I called a website an application. For example my Bank of America website is in the vault and bookmarked in Safari. I can open it in both instances with the user name and password. It does not seem to be protected. In another instance when I opened a website from the bookmark I was immediately taken to 1Password in order to open it. What do I have to do to cause the B of A site to do the same thing?

Yes, you're protected in the first instance. You CAN enter your name and password but, should you choose not to, you can't log on. Unless the bad guys have your login info, they also can not log on.

    Hi @Jim Philpot

Thanks for getting back to me!

For example my Bank of America website is in the vault and bookmarked in Safari. I can open it in both instances with the user name and password. It does not seem to be protected.

It sounds to me like you may have saved your username and password into both 1Password and Safari's keychain. This isn't necessarily a problem - it does not mean that your Bank of America data is unprotected, just that your details have been saved so that you don't have to enter them manually.

Generally, if you are saving your details into 1Password, we recommend disabling Safari's option to remember passwords, as things can get a bit confusing.

Here's how I generally use 1Password to log into websites (you'll notice that it completely avoids bookmarks in Safari, which is handy):

    • Use ⌘⌥\ ( Command-Option- \ ) to open 1Password mini
    • The focus is automatically in the search field, so I simply start typing the name of the Login that I wish to use
    • Once it is highlighted in the list, I hit 'Enter'
    • This opens the page and fills my details for me.

No need to clutter up Safari's menu bar with a bunch of bookmarks, all URLs that have a username and password are simply stored in 1Password, accessible with a simple keyboard shortcut.

So, if your original question was talking about removing various websites from your bookmarks folder in Safari, you can certainly remove them if you want.

I hope this helps, but we're here if you have any further questions!

    Hi @Jim Philpot

I've merged your two questions together, since it seems like we're discussing the same question in multiple places. This will allow us to keep the conversation in one place.

Should I remove all of my banking bookmarks from my Safari browser? They automatically open an application that is also in my 1Password vault. The 1Password icon is on my Safari site. On occasion when opening an application in the bookmarked Safari browser it immediately transferred to 1Password but on most sites it opens in Safari and is vulnerable.

    Hi Jim,

I'm very sorry it took longer than usual for us to get back to you about this! It sounds like your question is the same (or similar) as what you were asking about in the discussion you started last year, so I've merged them together into the same thread.

Should I remove all of my banking bookmarks from my Safari browser? They automatically open an application that is also in my 1Password vault.

When you say "application", do you mean "website"? If so, your bookmarks in Safari should only contain the URL of the website, and none of your login credentials. For example, you might have a bookmark in Safari that takes you to bankofamerica.com. Once you open that website, you can have 1Password fill your username and password. Or it's possible you have your username and password saved in Safari's built-in password manager, which would automatically fill that info for you after you use the bookmark to open the website. Either way, your username and password aren't stored in the Safari bookmark for that site (again, a bookmark only contains the URL of the website, not your username or password).

The 1Password icon is on my Safari site.

Do you mean that you see a 1Password icon in Safari's toolbar (i.e. the top of a Safari window, usually to the right or left of the address bar)? If so, that's the 1Password extension, which communicates with 1Password in order to save or use your 1Password data on a website. If you open a website by choosing one of your Login items from the 1Password extension, that works similarly to a bookmark, but also fills your username/password on the site.

On occasion when opening an application in the bookmarked Safari browser it immediately transferred to 1Password but on most sites it opens in Safari and is vulnerable.

I'm afraid I'm not sure what you mean here, can you please elaborate? Do you mean you open a bookmark in Safari in order to open a website, and then the main 1Password app launches automatically? That shouldn't happen - opening a bookmark from Safari should just open the website stored in that bookmark. Can you explain the exact steps you take, what happens when you do that, and what you think is vulnerable? The more details, the better. Thanks!

I'll add a little translation help, in case it might ... help!

    @Jim Philpot ,

Bookmark (Safari, or other browser): like a map in your car with some route highlighted (e.g., to your friend's house). A bookmark is a simple "route" to a website. And you and I know that a map route alone is insufficient to get into your friends house. It is OK to leave maps in your car (i.e. it is OK to leave your Safari bookmarks in Safari).

1Password stored logins: contains both the map AND the keys to your friend's house. The map gets you there, but the keys are required to get into the house (site). The keys are Not OK to leave in the car.

You may choose to remove the maps (bookmarks) from the car (Safari), and instead use the map and keys (1Password stored logins) that are saved in 1Password as your sole means of getting to your friends house, and opening the door.

    Thanks @MrC, that's a fantastic analogy! :)
