Bring back the classic but more visible 1Password key icon as an option [Under consideration]

Can we have an option to use the Key icon in at least the browser toolbars?

So many icons are basically just little circles that it takes much longer to find it now. I used to be able to mouse immediately to it, because the 'key' was a unique shape even out of the edge of my vision.

    Hi @DPattee‌,

We want it to be consistent with 1Password everywhere, including the extension icon for Mobile Safari and third party apps on iOS.

We don't plan to change or add an option to change the icon but we'll take it under consideration as we hear more from our 1Password customers.

@MikeT‌ I would also like an option to customize this icon, being a developer my self I understand the want to keep your branding consistent. However as @DPattee‌ mentioned its hard to see in a sea of circle icon's. And the keyhole shape does not translate well to a smaller form factor. My first thought when I found it was, "Why is there an error?" since it looks like ( ! ) to me. At-least provide your users an option to change the icon, have the default as the hard-to-see keyhole, but let users select the classic key icon.

    Hi @wgorgihuck,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, we'll keep it in mind. I do see why it may be difficult to see among other identical icons and as much as we use 1Password all day long, it'd be helpful to find it quickly as possible.

    Hello,
I am not a fan of the new keyhole 1Password icon that gets shown on the Safari toolbar.

The reason why is that it looks too much like the Safari developer Inspector toolbar icon, as shown in the image attachment. Please change it so that it looks different from the Inspector tool as I am finding I am often clicking one for the other because of their close similarity in look.

    Cheers, Andrew.

Unless you have very sharp eyes, the new browser icon is indistinguishable from the familiar IEC 5010 Power On/Off symbol (which, like the other IEC power symbols, still has no Unicode representation and so cannot be typed easily).

Bad design, IMO. Not user-friendly. You can do better.

I understand your desire for consistency. Can you at least add the blue circle around the menu bar icon to make it stand out a bit?

How is a “desire for consistency” served by having the browser icon be completely different from the menu bar icon? I never thought that I would miss the old 1P browser icon, but this IEC 5010 look-alike could do the trick.

Came here to note that the new Safari 1P button and Mac 1P Mini icon (keyhole), and the Windows tray icon (open/closed padlock), are no longer consistent with the 1P button for the Firefox extension (key on an angle). Rather than start a new thread, I'll just add that here, along with my desire to make the "key on an angle" icon the preferred one for the same reason (recognizability).

For the keyhole, with the lack of colour and small size, the keyhole "teeth" are tiny enough that it can make the icon look like one of those generic on/off buttons (i.e. a | inside a O). For the padlock, it's clear as to the function, but it's just extremely bland and generic (this is just anecdotal, but I have a total of 3 icons in my Windows tray right now that are or have padlocks, and 0 that have or are keys.).

I'm not sure why icon consistency continues to be such a problem for 1P... I pointed this out as far back as 2011. Maybe 1P Everywhere and the iOS App extension (which I love, BTW) should change their icons to a key!

I personally don't usually much care about these types of choices, but will chime in that not only did I have trouble quickly identifying the new icon, but after upgrading, so did 3 (of 3) other people who use 1Password. Just a data point.

    Hi @MrC‌,

For what it's worth, I agree. The new icon is a retrograde step.

Let's hope they review and take our comments onboard.

@froderic—The ı inside an O is the IEC 5010 Power On / Off symbol that I referenced in #7.

At this high magnification you can see that the ends of the IEC 5010 ı are rounded, but that is a pretty fine distinction. The 1Password browser icon is too similar for comfort.

    Hi guys,

Thanks, we really appreciate the feedback, especially the one about the standard power logo. I've added them to our growing list on this issue.

The Firefox extension hasn't been updated yet, we're working on a major issue with the Firefox extension, and will issue an update fairly soon.

I've tried to get used to the new keyhole icon in place of the old key, but honestly it's annoyingly generic. This is what my toolbar look like now...

Spot the circular icon I need to click on 500 times a day... I really wish it was more distinct.

I know the new task bar icons are kind of a PITA to work with, but it'd be super cool if we had the option to choose between the new icon (keyhole) and the old rather unique icon (key). The same goes for inside the browsers, although it's not as problematic for me there.

If anyone was wondering left to right those are:
DropBox, Fantastical, Cobook, Glui (all not circles)
    CloudUp
    Toggl
    Knock
    GFX (not a circle, yay!)
    1Password
    Flu.x
    iStat menus (not circles)

  • Hi @jb510,

I've merged your post into this thread as other users have shared the similar feedback. We do understand how it can feel generic now compared to other identical icons as well as the standard power icon. I've added your feedback to our tracker that our design team will review as soon as possible.

    Thanks for posting it here.

The new keyhole icon for the Safari toolbar is nearly unusable: very confusing and very difficult to identify. The old icons were much much easier to use. Please give us a choice of the old icons again.

    @MikeT‌—

Is this still just a beta issue or would it make sense to move the thread to the main Mac forum?

    Hi guys,

Have you thought about giving user the option of reverting back to the key mini menu icon? The current icon is round, which makes it hard to distinguish from all the other icons on my menu bar. Plus the keyhole aspect is such a small detail it is almost unnoticeable. I feel like I am looking for a circle with a straight line in the middle of it. I obviously am able to find it on my menu bar, but it always takes me just that much longer (cognitive load) to identify the icon.

Just a thought. Thanks for humoring my post.

    Cheers,
    DR

  • Hi guys,

@motees, added your feedback to our tracker.

@benfdc, you're right. I've moved this to the general Mac forum as it is not a beta issue.

  • Hi @Douglas Radecki‌,

Thanks for your post, I've merged it into the big thread about this here. I've added your feedback to our tracker and our design team will review it.

These are pretty good and legitimate beefs from 1P users. I wouldn't mind seeing the icon go back to the key, either. To all of you that are having trouble "finding" it, why don't you just move the 1P icon in the toolbar ALL THE WAY TO THE LEFT? That way you ALWAYS know where it is, and you don't have to be too concerned with confusing it with something else. That's what I do. Just my 2 cents.

  • Thanks for sharing your suggestion with us, that's a helpful tip for now. You might notice on your screenshot, 1Password icon is very thick compared to other icons, it does make it more visible but we want it to fit it in right.

Another vote for resurrecting the angled key icon for both the web browser and the 1PW Mini icon. That icon wasn't broken and didn't need fixing.

Whatever imagined advantage that would accrue from "consistency" is negated by ambiguity and confusion with the new icon.

    Just my $.02

  • Hi @randy_va,

Based on what we've been hearing, a lot of folks loves the new icon and they like seeing the 1Password icon in the third party iOS apps on iOS 8. So, it is a tough decision but we're hearing that we can do better and we will try.

Mike, thanks for listening to comments on this issue. For myself, and especially for my wife who also uses 1Password, please add two votes to your tracker to bring back the key icon or provide an option to do so (if that's possible). Our reasons have already been stated by other posters so I won't rehash them again.

I can understand the change to the keyhole, since it echoes the icon for the main application. The older key has no such reference any longer.

@hawkmoth—I would agree with you if the icon looked like a keyhole to the naked eye, but to my eyes it looks like a power button.

@benfdc - Granted. I know icon art is hard to implement - I made some tiny icons for Palm back in the day, and with only a few pixels, it takes special effort. To make it worse in OS X is that the icons now are monochrome. That said, I personally would prefer they work to make the keyhole look like a keyhole than to revert to the older key. But that's a preference. I can live with it either way.

a lot of folks … like seeing the 1Password icon in the third party iOS apps on iOS 8.

I like the iOS 8 app extension icon. It is large enough there that it does not look quite so much like a power button (mostly because the keyhole is rectangular rather than rounded), and, at least in Safari, the word 1Password appears beneath the icon.

I appreciate the consistency dilemma, but even so on my Mac I would prefer the key (or even the old 1P icon).
