1Password Mini annoyances (slow animation, auto selection)

Hi
I am running
1Password
Version 5.0 (500019)
Mac App Store

on OSX 10.10

There are a couple of things that drive me nuts.

  1. the resize animation of the 1p mini floating window is very slow and annoying and it serves no real purpose. IMHO it is confusing and slows down the usage of 1P
  2. the floating window will put the selection on wherever the mouse happens to be, which is very annoying when you operate mostly using the keyboard. It will auto expand the "random" menu item so if you have muscle memory to go down to the 3rd menu item, this won't work in case the mouse happens to reside on some random location. Then you need to press left (to go back to the menu and close the expanded password) and then move to the correct location.

Both of these make 1P much slower to use. I would like to have some "no visual whizz bang" flag that disables this.

  • Hi @rburgst,

Thanks for your feedback, we appreciate it.

This is on our list to improve in a future update, we've gotten a few requests to turn it off. In the meantime, if you have 1Password mini set to search all fields instead of titles only, that'll increase the amount of resizing because it takes longer to return all of the results at the same time.

By setting it to titles only, it'd improve it a bit.

the floating window will put the selection on wherever the mouse happens to be, which is very annoying when you operate mostly using the keyboard.

This is a new bug we've found on Yosemite, we didn't see this before. We're working on fixing it to ignore the mouse cursor when invoking mini.

We'll get both fixed as soon as possible. Thanks again!

Please oh please kill that slow animation! It is driving me insane! I love you guys and 1P, but please, this has gone on too long. Thank you.

    Hi @slboettcher,

I'm sorry that animation has been so frustrating for you! We haven't forgotten and our developers still plan on making improvements to that. I don't know exactly when to expect that, though. Thanks for your patience! I'll be happy to add your feedback to the ticket for this.

I'd like to second the original poster. These are the most annoying everyday bugs in 1Password for mac. How is this still not fixed?

Thanks @acdx, I'm sorry this hasn't been addressed yet. Many of us here are also eagerly awaiting an improvement to this! I'm sorry that I don't have a timeframe for the fix, but hopefully it won't be too much longer. I'll add your feedback to the ticket. Thanks for your patience and understanding! :)

I agree, I don't like that slow animation. It is very annoying. I just want the box to appear under the menu icon like before.

Another vote for letting us disable animations. This is incredibly frustrating. I'm considering switching to an alternative because the user experience has degraded so significantly due to the sluggishness of the menubar app.

Searching within the main application is instant and wonderful. Yet searching in 1Password Mini results in probably the most frustrating daily experience I have with OS X.

Please make searching faster. Animations are useless if they destroy the user experience.

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts here. Our developers have been working on this, and you should see better behaviour in an update soon.

    Hi @nicksergeant ,

Always happy to help! Of course, I can't say much about when the new update will be available, but we would love to hear your thoughts on the new animation when you update. :)

One would think this was really easy to fix.

    Hi @acdx,

The difficulty isn't necessarily the main factor here. We're a small company with a small development team, so we have limited resources for developing and maintaining new and existing versions of 1Password across multiple platforms. Fixes, changes, and new features all need to be prioritized, and there are various things that determine that.

Having said that, you'll be happy to hear that our developers have addressed this in a recent beta. So, barring any unforeseen circumstances, the fix should be included in the next update (although I don't have a timeframe for when that will be available). Thank you very much for all your patience, we really appreciate it! :)

    Hi,

I'm adding another reminder here to work on these issues. 1Password should allow disabling all animations with a setting in preferences. This includes the 1Password mini resizing animation, the unlock "vault" animation, and the "shake" animation for incorrect password.

These animations and the bugs that accompany them slow down work when trying to quickly find and copy a login password, a common everyday use case.

@acdx: I can't guarantee that we will change 1Password the way you think we 'should', but we can absolutely consider reducing animations, especially for those running older Macs that might get bogged down. Thanks for letting us know this is important to you!
