weird progress wheel for Autosubmit script in menu bar

In the menu bar on top
of my screen I find a spinning wheel that seems to be related to 1password. What is this, and why is it there? Ruud

  • Hi @rhk,

You're right in assuming that this is related to 1Password. This is a small piece of Applescript that 1Password installs, and is what makes it possible to actually submit login forms on websites when using the browser extension. It should only show up when you've asked 1Password to fill and submit a form, and then should go away. If it's sticking around long enough for you to be able to take a screenshot of it, then there's probably something going a little wrong in there (which is surprising as it's a single line of code). You should be able to click the (x) button without having to worry about anything bad happening.

    Hope this helps

I also have this from time to time. The X does not help. The only way I found to make it disappear is to deactivate 1P Mini, restart the Mac and activate it again. It happened to me 2-3 times and I can't reproduce it.

    Regards,
    Peter

  • Hi @Pebowski,

I'm sorry to hear you're been running into this trouble a few times.

Do you remember if auto-submit still works for you when this icon in the menu bar will not disappear?

I'd also like you to check the contents of the AppleScript file. Please run this command in Terminal (found in /Applications/Utilities):

    open ~/Library/Application\ Scripts/2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper/1Password_Autosubmit.scpt

Please let me know what you see in the AppleScript file that is opened.

Thanks in advance for the additional info!

    Hi Jasper!
I had not to remember, because it just happened again, so I can test it live. I tried two Autologins, both work, but the wheel ist still spinning. And pressing the X does nothing.

Here ist the contents of the Applescript:
tell application "System Events" to keystroke return

    Regards,
    Peter

  • This has been running for over an hour and I am unable to stop it by clicking the "x."

    Adding my .02 ¢ here.

I have never seen this running before, thought I have seen other processes running much like this during the Yosemite betas. I always tried a log out and back in or even a restart to fix it.

I am assuming this is some background process that is running that should really be transparent to the user, and its really a bug.

Edit: Clarify thinking it is a bug in Yosemite

Also like yourself, clicking the "x" seldom did anything to resolve the matter. I am also interested in what the staff have to say.

  • This is the first time I have seen this. Coincidently (or not) I recently updated 1Password via the AppStore update posted this week.

Hopefully @JasperP‌ will be able to offer some insight as to your issue. I have to confess I've never seen that before.

You're quite right @Pebowski‌ those threads are definitely about the same thing so I've merged them.

@Michael Shingledecker‌ I'm just pinging you here so you know where your thread has been 'moved' to. This way one response will reach you all. I'm wondering if this is more a Yosemite issue though than 1Password.

Hi guys, this is happening to me too. Mine's been spinning away all day long! It says the same thing (1Password_Autosubmission). Auto submits work fine for me.

    Hi @sambinding‌

Since my last post I've found an old thread with an explanation as to what's going on. I'll leave MikeT to explain it

@JasperP, thanks for checking in on us. I have the same issue with the spinning gear in the menu bar. The auto submit still works and I ran the script. Here's what popped up after I ran the script:
The Script Editor app opened a window called "1Password_Autosubmit.scpt"
in the window was the following text:
tell application "System Events" to keystroke return

and that's all that was in the window.

    BTW, I'm running OS X 10.10.1 on a 2009 Macbook Pro. I'm running 1Password 5.0.2 (paid version).

    Thanks!

    Hi @jpmintz01‌

That's all the script is meant to do. My understanding is it's to get around one of the sandbox restrictions in the MAS version of 1Password.

I'm wondering if you would actually miss the script much if you were to move the folder it's in to your Desktop and reboot. I don't have it on my newer Mac and I'd forgotten I'd probably installed it at some point in the past on the older machine.

My 1Password is doing this constantly - for days and days. I am not sure after reading this forum how to fix it. Can anyone help?

    Hi @caseylifec

Does this post help at all?

Same problem here with 1Password Autosubmit. Script continues to run for hours. All browsers are closed. Spinning gear icon in the menu bar...clicking on the "X" does not stop it.

I have to reboot to get back to normal.

AgileBits seems to be pointing their finger at OS X as the "problem" in other posts. This did not happen before Yosemite so maybe something did change, but it's an AgileBits script that's causing the problem, sooooo...

It's annoying and I shouldn't have to reboot, remove the script, or any of the other suggested "fixes".

This is an AgileBits 1Password bug that needs to be resolved...by AgileBits IMHO.

    Hi @richsadams,

Thanks for your feedback. We apologize for this annoying quirk in the Mac App Store version of 1Password. Our developers are aware of the issue and will address it if possible in a future release. In the meantime, though, you should be able to make it stop by moving the folder to desktop as described by my AgileBits teammate littlebobbytables in this post.

And as MikeT mentioned in this post, it wouldn't hurt to mention it to Apple as well, because there's only so much that our developers can do within Apple's guidelines, and Apple does have a hand in why this is happening (in other words, it takes two to tango). Hopefully, between the two of us, it will get resolved.

I'm sorry that's the best we can tell you for now, but please do let us know if moving the folder doesn't make a difference. Cheers! :)

    Thank you and understood.

I've removed the helper folder and so far so good.

    Thank you again.

    Hi @richsadams,

You're correct of course, if it looks like we're trying to shift the blame then we're not helping us or our loyal users.

The reason we look at this as more of an OS X issue is because of the simplicity of the script we're trying to run. Here is the script in full.

    --This simple script allows 1Password
--to perform autosubmit by pressing the return key on your behalf
tell application "System Events" to keystroke return

That's it in its entirety. One line where we ask System events to mimic the tapping of the return key. It can't loop and it shouldn't run for any more than a fraction of a second. The top two lines are comments and so aren't executed. Given just how simple the script is you can see why we look to OS X.

Thanks for the explanation and, again, understood.

Apple does listen to its customers but 1Password is one of more-or-less two gorillas when it comes to these types of applications. I'd think direct communications with Apple by AgileBits would carry more weight than trying to get a few pro-active (and frustrated) users to ask them to make changes to their code.

Either way, AgileBits may be waiting a long time.

If 1Password works as expected w/o the script it would seem more logical to simply remove it in the next update. If not, a workaround would seem to be in order.

    Thanks again for listening!

@richsadams, I'm glad the explanation from littlebobbytables was helpful! And yes, you're right that this should be reported to Apple by us as the developers - and I'd be surprised if we haven't already done so. But in addition to that, it's extremely helpful when Apple hears about a problem from users as well - that way, they know it's something that affects their own customers. We didn't mean to imply that we don't need to send our own bug report, we simply meant it helps for Apple to hear about these things from both developers and customers.

If 1Password works as expected w/o the script it would seem more logical to simply remove it in the next update. If not, a workaround would seem to be in order.

My understanding is that we have plans to remove the script at some point, once it is no longer needed at all. And as you can probably already tell, 1Password seems to work pretty well without it. I believe there are some rare instances where it is still helpful, though. For now, the workaround is to remove the folder containing that script, which you've done.

We're here for you if you need anything else! :)

I suddenly have the same issue as @richadams. Has this been resolved?

  • Hi @adamb108,

Does this post help? We haven't made any changes to this in 1Password 5 so you could say it remains unresolved. As I was trying to explain earlier, the script that is running almost cannot be any simpler so it's hard to see how we can resolve it without completely shifting away from using AppleScript entirely. We may end up doing this but we have to ensure everything is in place to do so and unfortunately I'm unable to offer any sort of timeframe (it's just our policy - sorry).

As long as it gets solved, I"m fine for now. Thanks.

    Thanks, @adamb108!

Meanwhile, you should be able to make it stop simply by moving the folder to the desktop as described in this post. Cheers! :)
